Books I Love

ree

The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien – Honestly The Hobbit was an amazing book but it often gets demoted to the worst in the universe but personally I felt The Hobbit was more engaging, entertaining and easier to read than Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers and I have yet to pick up Return of the King because of this.

My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell – For a debut this was fantastic and I can’t recommend it enough despite its pretty dark content. I loved Russell’s take on victimhood and how victims of sexual assault and grooming can have different reactions based on their individual experience and how not all victims see eye to eye.

ree

Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames – Another book I can’t recommend enough but it was a fast paced, action packed fantasy book with some outstanding touching moments as well as some of the best humour I have come across to date.

Books I Hate

ree

A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J Maas – Now I am going to unpopular here by saying I don’t like SJM’s books. I read ACOTAR and it was decent but I DNF’d ACOMAF at around the halfway mark and never continued on with the series and I never will. I have also read up to Queen of Shadows in the Throne of Glass series and wasn’t really enjoying it and although I do owe Crescent City I doubt I will pick it up.

ree

Catherine House by Elisabeth Thomas – Honestly I read something like 80% of this book and nothing happened. Enough said!

ree

Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan – I was so excited to read this book because it featured not only a lesbian couple but a kick ass fantasy setting, tons of Asian mythology and supposedly had a focus on sexual assault. However, upon reading it I was infuriated about how Ngan portrayed sexual assault and how the main character was immediately able to have a relationship without working through any of her trauma. I just have so many issues with this book.

Books that were Meh

ree

Heartstopper by Alice Oseman – Now I have only read 3 volumes of Heartstopper and while it was cute and wholesome and features a really nice LGBT couple it was just a little basic and in my opinion boring so overall it was just meh for me.

ree

City of Bones by Cassandra Clare – Here I am referring to the entire Mortal Instruments series which was poor at best but I did absolutely adore The Infernal Devices and I own both books currently out in The Last Hours series and I will be reading them very soon.

ree

Elantris by Brandon Sanderson – I love Sanderson’s work but Elantris being his first book was a meh experience. It had an amazing premise and magic system but it lacked the vibrancy in the characters and the rich world building that we have come to expect from Sanderson which is seen best in the Stormlight Archives.
