Title: A House of Cards (Undercity Chronicles #1)
Author: Savannah Skye
Genre: Paranormal/Romance
Rating: *****
Review: The opening of A House of Cards was brilliant, we are introduced to Hana Spear whose best friend Cassandra “Cassie” was a vampire who was killed. In search of answers and some closure, Hana travels to New York only to be jumped by some vampires and rescued by the police. We learn that Cassie is accused of being a blood runner or a vampire who illegally gets human blood to sell to other vampires, but Hana refuses to believe this. We also learn that Hana is targeted because Cassie apparently hid away a large sum of money that many are trying to get their hands on, but Hana has no idea about the money. It is lucky for her a hunky vampire cop named Avery comes to her rescue several times and the pair form an alliance while Hana is trying to work out what Cassie was involved in and why she seems to be the main target for the powerful vampires.
The relationship between Hana and Avery does progress quickly but given everything they have gone through and the fact that Hana gave Avery her blood I can understand why things moved so quickly and the scene itself was beautiful. However, we then learn that Cassie isn’t dead, but she faked her death and eventually tracked down Hana to the Topside of New York. The reunion between these two friends was beautiful given everything both of them have gone through. Getting some background into Cassie’s story which will be seen in more depth in the next novel, was really interesting especially learning how old she is and the type of life she had before she was turned.
The ending of A House of Cards was wonderful, I really enjoyed the relationship between all the characters and the setting was wonderful, rather than having vampires and humans hating/fighting each other they live amongst each other even employ the other which was a huge break for 99% of all other vampire books in the genre.
