Book Review
Title: All’s Well by Mona Awad
Genre: Psychological, Horror
Rating: DNF
So I have wanted to read this for the longest time since BooksandLala talked about it on her YouTube channel but the opening was both depressing and confusing at the same time. We are introduced to Miranda whose acting career was crushed after an accident which has left her with chronic pain and a dependence on painkillers as well as destroying her marriage. Working as an acting professor, she fears losing her job over the dissent her students are showing over putting on a performance of Shakespeare’s All’s Well That Ends Well. This is a play close to Miranda’s heart since she once starred in the lead role of the play. Miranda is a genuinely unlikeable character who I didn’t like from the beginning but when she meets three men in a bar who seem to have the magic cure for her chronic pain I was a little intrigued especially since this is marketed as horror.
As we approach the ¼ mark in the novel, we continue to follow Miranda’s absolute train wreck of a life and nothing seems to be improving for her. At her therapy sessions, her pain only seems to get worse instead of getting better and she reflects on how many different doctors and therapists she has seen since the accident and how no one has been able to help her. Her dependence on painkillers just to get through the day is beginning to become a real concern for those around her and work is just as bad. Despite picking a play she has a personal connection with her students want to do a more fun, action packed play like Macbeth. Eventually the students mutiny against Miranda and she is forced essentially despite being the theatres director to put on the play the students want rather than one that would broaden their horizons as actors. This infuriates Miranda but she knows there is nothing she can do about it now, however, I am not sure where the horror or thrilling elements are going to come into this.
As we cross the ¼ mark in the novel, I was honestly really bored and despite people hyping this book up, I think I am going to DNF it. Honestly, I personally think if I’ve invested enough time to read almost a third of your book then something mildly interesting should have happened by now. I get some people like this kind of book but it doesn’t work for me. I have read others like this such as Catherine House and My Heart is a Chainsaw, both of which I DNF’d at 75% and 50% respectively. I will give Bunny a go in the future but this just wasn’t for me.
