So I didn’t read a lot this month but what I did read I really enjoyed my favourites by far being the Gender Game, Vanilla and Daisy Jones and the Six. Highly recommended reads.
1. Awaken by Isadora Brown – Souls are being recruited by the devil himself to prepare for an all-out war against Heaven, and Reese Lespoir finds herself at the heart of it. She’s awoken from a coma by a kiss from a mysterious stranger who’s more prickly than prince. As she tries to assimilate to normal teenage life, she learns she now has the power to see the future, which apparently, requires careful training. Enter Prickly Prince, who seems to find more enjoyment being a witty drunk than honing her craft. When a girl is taken by Onyx City’s most notorious criminal, who may or may not be a demon, Reese is thrust into the forefront of the impending war well before she’s ready. Her new friend, Andie Shepherd, is intent on getting her sister back from the demonic criminal at all costs, and if Reese doesn’t help, Andie may have to rely on the assistance of a vigilante known only as Black Wing, dangerous as he is tall, dark and handsome. And that’s only if he’s in a particularly generous mood. Just because he has wings doesn’t mean he’s always an angel, after all.
2. Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid – They were the new icons of rock and roll, fated to burn bright and not fade away. But on 12 July 1979, it all came crashing down. There was Daisy, rock and roll force of nature, brilliant songwriter and unapologetic drug addict, the half-feral child who rose to superstardom. There was Camila, the frontman’s wife, too strong-willed to let the band implode – and all too aware of the electric connection between her husband and Daisy. There was Karen, ice-cool keyboardist, a ferociously independent woman in a world that wasn’t ready for her. And there were the men surrounding them: the feuding, egotistical Dunne brothers, the angry guitarist chafing on the sidelines, the drummer binge-drinking on his boat, the bassist trying to start a family amid a hedonistic world tour. They were creative minds striking sparks from each other, ready to go up in flames. It’s never just about the music…
3. Desired by the Alien by Sabrina Kade – Exer isn’t like other Sidyths. For one thing, he looks human—from the front, at least. That, combined with a past trauma on his homeworld, makes him less than eager to spend his days with his brothers and all the human females around them. Except for Sloane. Exer would give almost anything to make her his mate. But he’s not willing to push her into being more than friends. For one thing, he knows how bad things could get if it turns out he’s not the prince she’s always pining for. No. He’d rather spend his time caring for the pets he keeps in his private sanctuary than risk Sloane’s rejection—or worse. But when Sloane ends up putting her life in danger in order to dig into his past, he’ll have to decide what’s more important to him: keeping his secrets or saving the woman he loves.
4. Geneva Sommers and the Myth of Lies by C J Benjamin – A lie is like a single match–if not tended it can set the world ablaze. Geneva has unraveled a terrifying truth from the Book of Secrets. She is the only one who can decode the mythical map hidden deep in the Troian Center and save her beloved island from falling into the hands of Ravin, the evil god who killed her parents. In order to fulfill her magical destiny she must make a decision. Continue to run from her enemies or risk her life to face them head on? If Ravin’s dark army takes control of Hullabee Island, Geneva will lose her magic, the only connection she has left to her parents. But the only way to stop him is to return to the orphanage she barely escaped. Desperate to protect her friends and fulfill her destiny, Geneva begins to weave a dangerous web of lies thinking it’s the only way to protect everyone she cares about. But she’ll soon learn the price of such deception. Can Geneva save the island and repair the damage her lies have caused or will she be forced to watch everything she’s loves burn down around her?
5. Saga Volume 1 by Brian K. Vaughan & Fiona Staples – Saga is the story of Hazel, a child born to star-crossed parents from opposite sides of a never-ending galactic war. Now, Hazel’s fugitive family must risk everything to find a peaceful future in a harsh universe that values destruction over creation.
6. Sea Monsters and the Other Delicacies by The Beastly Boys – The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Beasts (RSPCB) operates a rescue center for werewolves, dragons, fairies, giants, sea monsters, and other fantastical creatures. The RSPCB has stopped crimes against beasts, but there are still some people out there who will do anything to get their hands on one of these mythic animals . . . even if that means crossing the members of the RSPCB. In the first book, Werewolf versus Dragon, a dragon’s mangled body arrives at the RSPCB, and the Society knows that they’ve got a real monster on their hands. Ulf, a werewolf-boy, and his friends must stop the most evil beast hunter before it’s too late.
7. The Gender Game by Bella Forrest – A toxic river divides nineteen-year-old Violet Bates’s world by gender. Women rule the East. Men rule the West. Welcome to the lands of Matrus and Patrus. Ever since the disappearance of her beloved younger brother, Violet’s life has been consumed by an anger she struggles to control. Already a prisoner to her own nation, now she has been sentenced to death for her crimes. But one decision could save her life. To enter the kingdom of Patrus, where men rule and women submit. Everything about the patriarchy is dangerous for a rebellious girl like Violet. She cannot break the rules if she wishes to stay alive. But abiding by rules has never been Violet’s strong suit. When she’s thrust into more danger than she could have ever predicted, Violet is forced to sacrifice many things in the forbidden kingdom … including forbidden love. In a world divided by gender, only the strongest survive…
8. Vanilla by Billy Merrell – In this emotionally raw novel written in verse, Vanilla and Hunter have been dating since seventh grade. They came out together, navigated middle school together, and became that couple in high school that everyone always sees as a couple. There are complications and confusions, for sure. But most of all, they love each other. As high school goes, though, and as their relationship deepens, some cracks begin to show. Hunter thinks they should be having sex. Vanilla isn’t so sure. Hunter doesn’t mind hanging out with loud, obnoxious friends. Vanilla would rather avoid them. If they’re becoming different people, can they be the same couple? Falling in love is hard. Staying in love is harder.
9. An Awfully Beastly Business: Werewolf versus Dragon by The Beastly Boys – The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Beasts (RSPCB) operates a rescue center for werewolves, dragons, fairies, giants, sea monsters, and other fantastical creatures. The adventure continues in the second book, Sea Monsters and Other Delicacies, for Ulf and his friends, Orson the giant, Tiana the Fairy, and Dr. Fielding. A sea monster has suffered a life-threatening injury, and it looks like the evil Baron Marackai is back–and this time beasts are on the menu. Ulf must stop him again–the future of the RSPCB depends on it.
