August Wrap Up

So I read 15 books in August, I had 2 DNF’s and 2 books I’d didn’t manage to finish reading within this month; Seven Ways We Lie and Cinder but they will be in my September Wrap up.

  1. Obsidio by Jay Kristoff & Amie Kaufman – Asha Grant came to Kerenza to escape her past. Too bad he just caught up with her. Asha survived BeiTech’s initial assault and has been working undercover with the hopelessly outmatched resistance ever since. The last thing she expected to worry about was her ex-boyfriend, Rhys Lindstrom who just landed planetside. Is he her way out – or guarantee she never gets off this frozen rock alive? But Asha’s not the only one with problems. Her cousin Kady’s ragtag band of survivors are headed for Kerenza – without enough oxygen to last the journey. Oh, and there might be an insurrection brewing. With BeiTech hurrying to repair their damaged jump gate, and a mass extermination planned for the Kerenza civilians, only a miracle could save them now. And everyone knows that miracles are just statistical probabilities…right?

2. Drop by Drop (Step by Step #1) by Morgan Llywelyn – In this first book in the Step By Step trilogy, global catastrophe occurs as all plastic mysteriously liquefies. All the small components making many technologies possible—navigation systems, communications, medical equipment—fail. In Sycamore River, citizens find their lives disrupted as everything they’ve depended on melts around them, with sometimes fatal results. All they can rely upon is themselves. And this is only the beginning . . .

3. Dead of Night (Aftershock #1) by Carlyle Labuschagne – In a dark and desolated After Earth, love still does exist, but the cost of bearing such a flaw is death. World War III has left Earth in utter turmoil. People’s beliefs are said to be the cause of the worldwide destruction. After The Clearing new laws are set about – to show certitude in anything besides the law is weak and chargeable as mutiny. To be illogical and have faith in religion is illegal, to be limitless is dangerous. And Illness is seen as a defect – all flaws that are inexcusable. But to love is the greatest betrayal of all man kind. It is a fault the world has long forgotten and punishable by death, a fatal risk Aecker and Opel are fully prepared to take – because in love there is freedom. But how far can they push back before it claims their lives and those they care about.

4. The Oddling Prince by Nancy Springer – In the ancient moors of Scotland, the king of Calidon lies on his deathbed, cursed by a ring that cannot be removed from his finger. When a mysterious fey stranger appears to save the king, he also carries a secret that could tear the royal family apart. The kingdom’s only hope will lie with two young men raised worlds apart. Aric is the beloved heir to the throne of Calidon; Albaric is clearly of noble origin yet strangely out of place.

5. The Earth, my butt and other big round things by Carolyn Mackler – Fifteen-year-old Virginia feels like a fat, awkward outsider in her perfect family, especially next to her golden-boy big brother Byron. She’s got a lot to deal with – her weight, her best friend moving away, the mean girls at school – not to mention a boy who seems to like her! To survive, she decides to follow the ‘Fat Girl Code of Conduct’ to make herself acceptable, unnoticed … invisible. It seems to be working until something unthinkable happens and, before her eyes, Virginia’s flawless family begins to fall apart. As her world spins out of orbit, Virginia realises that breaking the Fat Girl Code might be the only way to create a life that belongs to her.

6. The Universe is expanding and so am I by Carolyn Mackler – Six months after Virginia decides to ignore the ‘Fat Girl Code of Conduct’ and make her relationship with Froggy Welsh the Fourth official, things are getting complicated. She’s not sure she still likes Froggy, her mum has betrayed her to the meanest girl in school, and her feelings about her brother Byron are still a mess since he was suspended from university for date rape. But then police come to their apartment and arrest Byron. As Virginia tries to figure it all out, she meets Sebastian – a guy with his own private drama. They make a pact not to talk about their troubles, but then a terrible secret comes out that could ruin everything.

7. Dragon School: Dragon Piper by Sarah K. L. Wilson – Amel Leafbrought is still recovering from a grievous wound, but when a good friend offers her a chance at a risky opportunity to get Savette the support she needs, Amel chooses to take it. But the opportunity comes with a limited time window and Amel will have to do something she never imagined would be her job. Is she ready to take this next step?

8. Sense and Sensibility by Stacy King (Goodreads Author) (Story Adaptation), Po Tse (Art by), Jane Austen (Original Story) – Impulsive Marianne Dashwood and cautious Elinor are as different as two sisters could be, yet both are shattered by their father’s sudden death. Elinor’s attachment to the reserved Edward Ferrars is torn asunder by family opposition and his own dark secret, while Marianne’s brilliant romance with the dashing John Willoughby comes to a tumultuous end in a devastating public betrayal. Can the two sisters overcome these trials to find true, lasting happiness?

9. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Crystal Chan (Goodreads Author) (Adapted by), Kuma Chan (Art by), Mark Twain, Jeannie Lee (Lettering) – Chafed by the “sivilized” restrictions of his foster home, and weary of his drunkard father’s brutality, 14 year-old Huck Finn fakes his own death and sets off on a raft down the Mississippi River. He is soon joined by Jim, an escaped slave. Together, they experience a series of rollicking adventures that have amused readers, young and old, for over a century. The fugitives become close friends as they weather storms together aboard the raft and spend idyllic days swimming, frying catfish suppers, and enjoying their independence. Their peaceful existence ends abruptly, however, with the appearance of the King and the Duke, an incorrigible pair of con artists who take over the raft. After many difficulties, Huck and Jim escape their tormentors, and with the help of an imaginative rescue by Huck’s old friend Tom Sawyer, Jim gains his freedom.

10. Red Dragon by Thomas Harris – Sexual hunger; demonic violence; sinister logic – the lethal components of a deadly formula driving a psychopath in the grip of an unimaginable delusion; a boastful killer who sends the police tormenting notes; a tortured, torturing monster who finds ultimate pleasure in viciously murdering happy families, and calls himself. . . The Red Dragon.

11. The Stereotypical Freaks (Forever Friends Trilogy #1) by Howard Shapiro – The Stereotypical Freaks is the first book in the Forever Friends Series. Four dissimilar high school seniors come together to compete in their school’s battle of the bands. When one member reveals life altering news, winning the competition takes on more of a meaning to each member. They set out to win one for the good guys… will they?

12. The Hockey Saint (Forever Friends Trilogy #2) by Howard Shapiro – Through a chance meeting, Tom and hockey legend Jake form an unlikely friendship. Tom discovers that his idol isn’t as perfect up close. With Jake living too much in the moment and with his past catching up to him, can Tom help him before it’s too late?

13. Hockey Karma (Forever Friends Trilogy #3) by Howard Shapiro – The highly anticipated sequel to the award winning “The Hockey Saint” taking place ten years after “Saint” ends. The legendary Jeremiah “Jake” Jacobson, now thirty two, has been the world’s best hockey player over his fourteen year career because of his out of this world talent and his smart play. But he can’t stay on top forever, and when he starts making mistakes on the ice, his career and family life start to crumble.

14. Chimera: Book One – The Righteous and the Lost by Tyler Ellis – Haunted by their pasts, a crew of thieves is hired for a covert mission to steal a priceless artifact in the midst of a galaxy being ripped apart by an interstellar holy war. If they want to survive – much less succeed – they must navigate hostile worlds, vengeful aliens, a deranged demon, and betrayal from within.

15. La Magnifique Grande Scène #1 by Cuvie – Kanade, a girl gifted with an observing eye and an ability to get things done. This is the story about her journey discovering the beauty of classical ballet and the joy of dancing. From the popular author that brought us Vanitas, comes a romantic story that makes the beauty of classical ballet come alive.
