#bookishwish

Twitter has been taken by storm over the past few days by a hashtag called #bookishwish. There are many variations of the tag popping up for different countries all around the world hoping that someone will be able to help grant one of their bookish wishes.

So what exactly is the #bookishwish?

The whole point of the bookish wish is that you may be in a place where you can help someone who may not be able to purchase books, or they are hard to find in their area, or just books that someone has been wanting for a while but has not yet gotten around to purchasing. So with this hashtag, people are posting a list of their bookish wishes be that an ARC, a hardcover, or paperback copies of books that they would love to have.

What I love most about this tag is that its something that I can actively participate on. Don't get me wrong, #booksfortrade is also great but when you are just getting started with a book blog it can be extremely hard to find a viable trade. Most people on the #booksfortrade are looking for unicorns or other ARCs that can be extremely hard to find and impossible for someone like me to make a trade. This doesn't mean that you wont find those unicorn books and hard to find ARCs on wishlists in the #bookishwish thread as well. But it also asks for people to post wish lists of items that are finished copies as well. The fact that I can feel included and also help grant some bookish wishes has been amazing!

This tag is also helping to foster such a wonderful and giving environment across the book community and I enjoy seeing how many people are just so thankful to receive books from someone. And by participating in this tag, I have met so many amazing people and I'm excited to foster some new friendships through this tag as well!

Interview with Love, Julie @DailyJulianne - the person who started it all!

First a quick bio about Julie:

Julie Daly is sometimes known as Julianne. A recent college grad, when not job hunting, Julie is watching Netflix, talking about YA on twitter, or trying to make her cats play. In 2009, Julie joined a group blog called Bloggers[Heart]Booksand her obsession with all things YA has grown exponentially. Though she no longer blogs, she did create #quietYA, writes for YA Interrobang and Pique Beyond, and is a cofounder of Blogbound Con. Julie has also interned at several publishers and sometimes plays bookseller. Follow her on Twitter at @DailyJulianne or instagram@juliecaughtreading

What made you decide to start the #bookishwish

It started with my own privilege. I tweeted about a book I'd been wanting to get my hands on and because I know a lot of people who are involved in publishing and go to conferences, a week later that ARC was in my hands. This wasn't the first time it had happened, but it definitely struck me how many other people aren't as fortunate. I knew I had some books I wanted to get rid of and I was sure some other friends and publishing professionals did, so I thought I'd try to start something where I could easily look and boost voices.

Did you ever think that it would catch fire like this and so many people would be both asking for wishes as well as granting wishes?

Not a clue! I hoped I could clear my shelves a bit and that some of my friends could too. I knew that sometimes putting something out in the universe could make things happen. The number of people stepping up to offer books and buy books and asking to see wishlists astounds me.

Even if people don't currently have the money to grant wishes is there something they can do to help feel involved in the community?

The tag has been lovely because there have also been giveaways of books. There have been people offering custom swag and blog banners and people asking just for recommendations of books and friendship. Even just boosting can help. If you still want to do more, a lot of people in the tag of blogs or youtube channels or instagram accounts and you can connect with them there. But I've found one of the best things to do is to just follow people and start chatting with them - complimenting their taste in books, chatting about movies and TV shows, just interacting regularly.

Do you have any bookishwishes that you would like granted?

Honestly, I had a handful that I listed when this all started, but I've had so many granted at this point, I just want to help others. I hope people keep boosting and keep participating, focusing especially on marginalized readers, teen readers, and readers living outside the US and UK.

Anything else you would like to say?

I'm so, so thankful for everyone who's been involved in the tag. Thank you all.
