Bren’s Blessing & Matthias’s Miracle (Quasar Lineage Series Book 1 & 2) by Pearl Tate

Book Review

Title: Bren’s Blessing & Matthias’s Miracle (Quasar Lineage Series Book 1 & 2)

Author: Pearl Tate

Genre: Sci-Fi/Romance

Rating: ***

Review: So as this is a bind-up of two books, I am going to review them individually so half of this review will cover book 1: Bren’s Blessing and the second half will cover Matthias’s Miracle. Book 1 is going to follow Hannah and Bren, it starts with Hannah basically being kidnapped from her own spacecraft orbiting Mars when some aliens set off the self-destruct sensor. Hannah has an immediate connection with the Captain named Bren and through him, we realise he is forming a mating bond with Hannah, yet this should happen because she is human but the dreams, vision and finding her all point to her being Bren’s mate.

After giving in to his primal desire Bren learns he was right about Hannah being his mate as after their lovemaking she develops the mating marks which are like living tattoos that Bren also has. However, he must now explain how Hannah has the marks and how they are mated to the other aliens around him. As we approach the ¼ mark in the novel, we learn that Bren species can’t mate especially the males due to some unknown circumstances and Bren is the first in a long time, while they are trying to document and understand the side effects of mating Bren is advised to contact his brother Matthias but that would mean informing the Council which would effectively turn him and Hannah into Guinea pigs for their race.

Things take an interesting turn when Hannah learns that Bren actually is promised to another woman and that she is now mated to him, but when it is explained that the males of their species are forced to mate with several women in the hopes of conceiving children Hannah is understandably sad for Bren and the others although Bren is pimped out as he has been promised since he was a child. This means he was a virgin before he slept with Hannah and while this does make her feel better Bren has been ordered to return home to possibly face judgement for breaking his promise to Vina. As Bren tries to investigate the old laws on mating on their journey back to his planet, Hannah is confused about what it means for them when Bren asks her to contact the historians. At first, she is utterly perplexed about how her request would have more weight than Bren’s and then she learns that Bren neglected to mention that their planet is run by women.

The ending of Bren’s Blessing was interesting, to say the least, and was by far my favourite bit of the novel. However, I felt that the book focused more on the sexual relationship between Hannah and Bren to the point where it was no longer interesting. Learning about their culture, the trails and so much more would have made the book a more enjoyable read. Due to this, I won’t be reading Matthias’s Miracle.
