Book Review

Title: Chainsaw Man Vol. 1 by Tatsuki Fujimoto

Genre: Manga, Fantasy, Horror

Rating: 5 Stars

I have been aware of this manga and its current anime adaptation since it dropped but I never picked it up thinking it wouldn’t be my thing but after watching tiktoks of the anime I had to give it a chance. This first volume is packed full of information but it is also fast paced and action packed. We are introduced to our protagonist, Denji who was left with an insane amount of debt after his father died and he is now working to repay that debt to the yakuza. However, when he was young he found an injured dog devil who he rescued and named Pochita. He and Pochita had a contract to help each other and when the yakuza kill Denji, Pochita takes over his body making him into a devilman of sorts but he is unique.

After this change he is found by Makima, who works for the government branch of devil hunters and she gives Denji a job believing he will be useful in her experimental squad that using devil hunters and devilmen in killing devils. Denji is first introduced to Aki, but they get into a fight since Aki believes that Denji isn’t serious about the job and he is concerned Denji is going to get killed. However, Denji who has never been loved or had things like a house or food this job is amazing even if it means dying but he finds his dream in getting a girlfriend or at least sleeping with a woman before he dies. He is also paired up with a devilman, although she is female named Power and the pair try to get along but Power gives Denji to a bat devil in return for her cat, the only thing she has an attachment to.

The bat devil seemingly kills Denji but we know better before eating Power’s cat then her before taking off to kill people. However, Denji at this moment activates Pochita’s power because he understands Power had the same bond with her cat as he did with Pochita who lives inside of him as his heart and decides to kill the devil leaving the volume on a cliff-hanger as Denji first real battle as a devil hunter begins. Honestly, this had everything I wanted in a manga, interesting characters and powers, humour, blood, guts and just about everything else and I can’t wait to continue with the series.
