Title: Claire's Apocalypse by K.T. Rose
Genre: Horror, Science Fiction, Short Story
Rating: 5 Stars
As most of my reader will know I have a love, hate relationship with short stories especially those in the horror genre but I was intrigued by Claire’s Apocalypse which centres around Dr. Claire Lyle working for the Bioweapons Division as she creates the most infectious microbe known to man. After years of working on the virus known as V7, created to be the next big bioweapon, Claire’s whole department is shut down but she refuses to let the virus be destroyed so she takes it and intends to sell it to the highest bidder.
It turns out that the highest bidder is someone known to her as is the person coming to collect it. While she waits Claire reflects on everything she has sacrificed to get to this moment and the truth behind what she is going to do. When her contact arrives, she realises that while she has her money the tickets to an underground bunker safe from the virus are only for one person not her whole family as she was promised and while Claire tries to call off the deal but it is too late. Overall, Claire’s Apocalypse was an interesting story and the premise would have been great for a full length novel similar to World War Z in tone. Claire was also a deeply flawed protagonist as she has ordered things done in the name of science that were horrific but when the tables are turned on her and she is confronted with the reality of what she has created she is remorseful and the only regret she has is not being with her family at the end. I would highly recommend Claire’s Apocalypse for horror fans just looking for something to whet their appetite or to break the dreadful reading slump.
