Dark Magic (Darkhaven Saga #2) by Danielle Rose

Book Review

Title: Dark Magic (Darkhaven Saga #2)

Author: Danielle Rose

Genre: YA/Paranormal

Rating: *****

Review: After the seemingly conclusive ending of Dark Secret, I wasn’t sure what to expect from Dark Magic as we re-join Ava in her new life as a witch turned vampire. The opening to Dark Magic was definitely explosive as it starts two weeks after the end of book one with Ava and Jasik hunting down some rogues but they are greatly outnumbered. Ava manages to defeat the ones after her but when she hears Jasik in pain she races back to help and the pair are quickly overwhelmed but Ava manages to call upon her old magic to save them. This shouldn’t be possible now she is a vampire and even the vampire leader; Amicia doesn’t understand what this means so she decides to call Holland home to the manor but Holland isn’t a vampire but a witch.

When Holland finally arrives he tells Ava that he has never met or heard of anyone like her but he isn’t going anywhere until he has taught her to control her magic in this new form. I like Holland as a characters and surprisingly I want to see how his relationship with Jeremiah works out as they are ex’s rather than the budding relationship between Ava and Jasik which I couldn’t really care about. They don’t really get to talk much about this when Jeremiah bursts in telling the others that he was attacked by rogues but also heard that a witch had been taken. Ava fights for the others to come and help her lend their support to the witches and they only agree because she is so stubborn that she would go alone if no one else went with her. When they arrive at her mother’s home, they aren’t welcomed warmly even her old friend Liv is against her now but when the rogue arrives with the vampire that wants Ava for himself, everything is thrown up into the air. Unwittingly the witches and vampires are drawn into a battle alongside each other and Ava is the primary target but when she uses her magic to destroy the rogue even the one who initially bit her, the witches are horrified that a vampire can use magic and cast her even further out, completely shattering the notion Ava had that someday she might be allowed to return. Upon returning back to the manor she has been thinking about how the magic feel in her body and confesses to Holland that it feels like it is trying to take control of her and he swears to help her control it.

In the time Ava and Holland are training they become good friends, so much so that she confides in him about the strange dream/premonition she has about her own mother attacking her. With Holland’s help she is able to access her magic and she it is still a part of her she controls, just like it was before she became a vampire, this is good news as it means she can learn to expand and control it as a useful weapon as it was in her former life but her other gifts are stilling warning her that danger is lurking in the shadows, not in the shape of a rogue but in the shape of her own family, her coven. Since she revealed that she can still use magic it feels like the tensions between the witches and the vampires have been growing and it may be leading to a battle or something later on in the series. When Ava learns that the rogues aren’t gone but rather they are just waiting for another leader to present themselves, Ava knows they will want to get back at her and the easiest way for them to do that is to go after the witches. Ava pleads with the others to help her as they did before but they refuse as the witches don’t want their help and Amicia gives Ava the choice them or the witches and Ava has no choice but to choose her mother over them.

She races to her mother’s house to find the rogues are already there and quickly dispatches them without any help from the witches and takes a lot of damage herself in the fight but Jasik and the others are there to take her home. When she wakes the next evening, Malik informs her the witches are outside and they won’t leave until they speak with her which she finds hard to believe. Ava also discovers that crosses and silver don’t affect her as she can wear her father’s cross which besides her stake which she lost in the battle are the only things she has belonging to her father. When she heads outside the witches tell her that someone has been taken and Ava tries to tell them it was just a ploy used by the rogues, but she soon learns that someone has indeed been taken and it is someone she loves dearly, her best friend Liv. Overall, I really enjoyed Dark Magic compared to the first book and I am really excited to jump into Dark Promise to see what happens to everyone and whether the witches and vampire can actually work together for once.
