Dark Night (Dragon School #10) by Sarah K. L. Wilson

Book Review

Title: Dark Night (Dragon School #10)

Author: Sarah K. L. Wilson

Genre: YA/Fantasy

Rating: *****

Review: After the dramatic ending of Prince of Dragons, I couldn’t believe I was already halfway through the series. Dark Night opens with the injured Dominar being brought into the mountain along with his personal guards before they lock themselves inside. Much like Hubric, the Dominar is suffering from an infection and Ashana has to remove the infected part of the arm to save his life but Amel suspects Iskaris of being the snake inside the Dominar’s court and Savette confirms this by telling Amel she believes he is working with the Ifrits and he wants Amel’s messages. Luckily, Hubric wakes up here and plays a game of cards with Ashana and it seems like they are playing a losing hand given their current situation and they have no way out at the moment as Savette isn’t strong enough to deal with the multiplying number of Ifrits outside.

Despite his best efforts Iskaris doesn’t get the messages and the riders are looking for a way out of the mountain that doesn’t involve surrendering to the Dusk Covenant. Iskaris believes this what the Dominar meant when he uttered the word mercy but I believe it related to a prophecy involving Savette and the Dominar. Raolcan also informs her they are close to the dragon warrens which run under the earth and will give them an escape route even though the Ifrits can follow them, they might just have a chance. Together Raolcan and Amel come up with a plan to escape and for the first time we see Raolcan truly use his power as the Dragon Prince but getting the Dominar out without getting killed or caught is going to be a major problem for Amel to overcome.

The escape through the warrens is going well as they send the refugees off to the dragon lands using a portal created with dragon magic but they are quickly overrun by Ifrits meaning the dragon riders including Amel, Raolcan and the Dominar have to make a retreat but they are led into a trap. Raolcan manages to get them to the next checkpoint but Savette has exhausted her power and can’t activate the portal meaning they are stuck. That is until Hubric comes up with the idea to lend Savette his and Amel’s minds in order to rejuvenate her power and get them out of the warrens before it is too late. This doesn’t go to plan as the dragons need to fight the Ifrits to give their riders a chance to escape with the Dominar when they are accidently hit with a tail that gravely injured Amel and knocks them all from the circle. By the time they get back in and activate it, they are scattered and the only thing Raolcan can do right now is fly to the Lands of Haz’drazen and seek help. Overall, Dark Night was brilliant, exciting, and tense. I am really excited for Bright Hopes and figuring out all over again where the Dominar is and if he is safe.
