Title: Dear Lonely Heart
Author: Fiona Starr
Genre: Romance
Rating: ****
Review: In Dear Lonely Heart we are introduced to Claire & Thomas who are both signed up to a matchmaking service by a family member. We learn that neither has had much luck in love, but Claire was married, and her husband died in a car accident. This matchmaking service is different from others as it is dependent on matches sending each other handwritten letter in order to get to know one another which suits Claire and Thomas perfectly as both are introverted. Claire is assigned the pen name Simple Life and Thomas’ is Lonely Heart.
As they start writing to each other they are both nervous and it comes across, but the information is basic, where they live, what they do for a living etc. However, it is important to note that both like the idea of the person writing their letters. The timescale for the letters isn’t given but it seems they have been conversing for several weeks when the woman who runs the matchmaking service is having a cocktail party for potential matches to meet in person and I am hoping that this is when Claire & Thomas really hit it off, however, the synopsis does give away the fact that it isn’t smooth sailing for the pair.
As we cross into the second half of the story, Claire and Thomas have met and there is such a spark there, however, Thomas does mention he had cancer as a teenager, and I think this might be the reason for the misunderstanding later on. Despite all this, I was kind of disappointed that this book was so short I felt it had the real potential to be a full-length contemporary romance. As their relationship gets deeper, things escalate but after spending the night with Thomas, Claire learns there is only a 2% chance of her getting pregnant because of the cancer treatments and she is furious as it means he lied on his application when he said he wanted children otherwise they wouldn’t have been paired together.
The couple doesn’t really get to talk about this bombshell as Claire’s dad is in the hospital and isn’t doing well so she has to rush off leaving Thomas alone and hurt. In the end, the pair manages to work out their differences and they live a very happy life and the ending of the story was beautiful, to say the least. The only downside to this book was the fact that it wasn’t longer as I would have loved to have seen more of Claire and Thomas, but I will be reading more for this author and series as soon as I can.
