Title: Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Vol 1 by Koyoharu Gotouge
Genre: Manga, Fantasy
Rating: 4 Stars
I have watched season 1 & 2 off the anime as well as the Mugen Train movie so I have already seen a good portion of the manga and I am aware of what happens in the later part of the manga but I still watched to read it for myself. Since season 3 is airing right now and I am waiting for it to be completed before binge watching it I though reading the 23 volumes of the manga would be a good idea.
We are essentially following Tanjiro Kamado on his journey to become a demon slayer after his entire family was killed and his younger sister, Nezuko was turned into a demon. After fleeing with Nezuko, Tanjiro encounters one of the demon slayers, Giyuu who sees something different in Nezuko and sends the siblings to his sensei, Urokotaki to be trained. Urokotaki agrees to take Tanjiro on and begins to train him while Nezuko sleeps as this seems to be her way of regenerating unlike other demons that simply eat people.
During his training Tanjiro becomes a lot stronger and learns about demons and their weaknesses before he is given his final test in cutting a huge rock with just his sword. Tanjiro doesn’t think it can be done and for six months he continues his training alone on the mountain before encountering Sabito and Makomo, two of Urokotaki’s former students who help Tanjiro truly understand the breathing technique and he eventually cuts the rock before being allowed to enter the final selection process.
We learn that both Sabito and Makomo are dead after being killed by a demon in the final selection but Tanjiro isn’t aware of this until he encounter said demon for himself. The final selection is the last test for demon hunters where they have to survive for a week on a demon infested mountain. Tanjiro having met the spirits of Sabito and Makomo is furious at the demon but soon settles into the fighting patterns he had learnt but he also notices something about the demon thanks to his keen sense of smell but this is where the volume ends.
