Book Review

Title: Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Vol 13 by Koyoharu Gotouge

Genre: Manga, Fantasy

Rating: 5 Stars

Volume 13 didn’t let up on the action or the emotional moments for single second. As Hantengu and his four other bodies begin to attack the demon slayers, Gyokko is cutting through the swordsmiths to try and deal a huger blow to the demon slayers. Muichirou later backed up by Mitsuri are protecting the swordsmiths from Gyokko while Genya, Tanjirou and Nzeuko deal with Hantengu and his multiple bodies.

Tanjirou with his sharp battle analysis is the first to realise that cutting the heads off the clone bodies doesn’t actually do anything and they have a variety of both close and long range attacks. He notices that the clones regeneration slows down if the mark on their tongues is cut or severed but it only buys them a few moment. None of them seem able to deal with the clones but Tanjirou’s sharp nose senses that there is a fifth body of this demon and he sends Genya towards it even though his appearance is more demon like now and even huge blows don’t seem to kill him.

Hantengu is hiding in a really small form which works well for hiding in the forest but Genya quickly realises his gun does nothing and he doesn’t have the strength to cut off the head of this small demon so he gives that job to Tanjirou despite his obsession with becoming a Pillar. We also get to see some of Genya and Sanemi’s backstory which was heart-breaking. Their mother was the protector and after the death of their deadbeat father, Sanemi wants to protect his siblings. After his siblings are killed by their mother after she is turned into a demon, Sanemi is the one to kill her.

Genya doesn’t take the death of his mother well and blames Sanemi for it although he understands now why his brother had to do what he did and he wants to apologize for that but he doesn’t think he is every going to get the chance and he has been working hard to prove himself to his brother. However, unlike Sanemi, Genya can’t use breath techniques much like Rengoku’s younger brother and that seems to make him worthless in Sanemi’s eyes.
