Volume 18 is one where Tanjirou and Inosuke really shine, Tanjirou is able to enter the transparent world and completely make himself invisible to Akaza by hiding his “battle spirit” and Giyuu sees this. At that moment, Tanjirou is able to cut off Akaza’s head but he isn’t going down easy as he manages to change his weak spot at the last moment like Hantengu did but something interesting happens at this moment, Akaza’s human memories come flooding back in.
Akaza remembers that he was Hakuji, a criminal who robbed people to pay for his father’s medicine but his father committed suicide not wanting his son to go down this path in life. Eventually Hakuji is picked up and taken in by the owner of a dojo allowing Hakuji to train his body in return for caring for his sick daughter. Koyuki. In this time, Hakuji and Koyuki become close and when she is 16 and he is 18 he agrees to marry her and carry on his mentor’s dojo.
While he away visiting the grave of his father, a rival dojo poisoned their well killing his mentor and fiancée. Hakuji goes mad and kills the 60+ members of that rival dojo with his bare hands prompting Muzan to arrive assuming it was the work of a rogue demon only to find a human, so he changes Hakuji into Akaza. Upon remembering Akaza decides to give up using his own ability to destroy his body so he can go back to the people he cared about who are willing to follow him into hell. After the battle is over both Tanjirou and Giyuu collapse from exhaustion and we switch back to Kanao’s fight with Douma.
Kanao is more perspective than most and realises many things about the way Douma fights but she can’t seem to get in close enough to do any real damage when Inosuke arrives to join the right, landing some minor blows on Douma. Douma takes Inosuke’s boar mask and upon seeing his face realises this is the son of a woman he ate 15 years before, Inosuke’s mother who in her final moments dropped Inosuke off a cliff to prevent him from being killed by Douma. This sparks a fire in Inosuke as the pair prepare for the fight of their lives the volume ends.
