Title: Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Vol 20 by Koyoharu Gotouge
Genre: Manga, Fantasy
Rating: 5 Stars
Volume 20 starts the final arc as the final battle with Muzan is approaching fast. While Muichirou and Sanemi are injured they continue to fight and Genya does as well in his own way. After consuming Kokushibo’s hair in order to heal, he finds a piece of his blade made from his demon flesh and consumes that as well. This gives Genya a huge boost as well as a blood demon art meaning he is more demon than human now but it turns the tide of the battle.
With Genya ’s assistance from the sidelines, Muichirou is able to land a hard blow on Kokushibo which is followed up by Sanemi and Gyomei also landing their own blows and eventually take his head off but the demon doesn’t go down. As he regenerates Muichirou stabs him again and this time his blade turns red burning Kokushibo from the inside and we learn more about the origin of the marks and the red blades. Anyone bearing a mark should die by the age of 25 but Gyomei is 27 and has his and the only other person to do this was the first breath user, Yoriichi who also happened to be the twin brother of Kokushibo, with Yoriichi being the younger of the two.
Yoriichi was born with his mark which is why he was able to live so long with it unlike Kokushibo who awakened his mark later in life, while Kokushibo wanted to be a samurai he wasn’t gifted with the blade like Yoriichi and had to work hard. Yoriichi despite being gifted didn’t like hurting others and after the death of his mother went to the temple despite their father wanting to make Yoriichi his successor. They met again later in life when Kokushibo has married and had children and Yoriichi has become a swordsman so Kokushibo follows him.
He eventually comes to realise he will never surpass his brother since he can’t use the breath of the sun and lacks Yoriichi’s skill so he ends up becoming a demon before the mark can kill him. With three demon slayer marks and their blade turning red, Sanemi, Gyomei and Muichirou along with Genya are able to take Kokushibo down but at the cost of Muichirou and Genya ’s lives. We also learn they weren’t provided with more help since Giyuu and Tanjirou were sent forward to where Muzan is hiding.
