Title: Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Vol 7 by Koyoharu Gotouge
Genre: Manga, Fantasy
Rating: 5 Stars
Volume 7 definitely started to break my heart since it is the first half of the Mugen Train movie and I want to cry knowing what is coming. After being taken care of and training at the Butterfly Mansion, Tanjiro, Inosuke and Zenitsu leave on their next mission which is to help Rengoku on his mission. Shinobu also instructs Tanjiro to talk to Rengoku about his Dance of the Fire God since it might be related to Rengoku’s flame breathing technique. Upon arriving at the train station we get to see the difference in upbringing of our main trio since only Zenitsu knows what a locomotive and Inosuke’s reaction to train is comedy gold at this point.
Once the board it doesn’t take them long to find the Flame Pillar and he and Tanjiro talk. While Rengoku doesn’t know what Tanjiro’s technique is, he does know that flame breathing has a long history and wants to take Tanjiro on as his apprentice in order to teach him more about it. However, pretty soon everyone falls asleep and the true demon on the train makes his appearance. The last time we saw Enmu he had been given an insane amount of blood by Muzan which has upgraded his dream technique by a huge amount. He emotionally manipulates humans into helping him and gives them special rope to bind themselves to the demon slayers so they can enter their dreams and destroy their spiritual cores from the inside essentially mentally crippling them.
We get to see the inside of everyone’s mind and what they dream about which is especially heart-breaking for Tanjiro as he sees his family alive and Nezuko human again. He is also the first to realise thanks to Nezuko bleeding after headbutting him that he is in a dream and figures out how to wake up. When he does he realises no one else is awake and begins tracking the demon responsible and he comes across Enmu who explains his ability a little before attempting to send Tanjiro back to sleep. However, Tanjiro knows he has to kill himself in the dream in order to wake up which makes Enmu’s ability useless at this point and Nezuko has succeeded in waking some of the others up.
While trying to kill Enmu, Tanjiro learns that he has fused his whole body with the train and the hundreds of people inside are his captives until he can make them his victims. With everyone sort of awake, Rengoku takes 5 cars, Zenitsu and Nezuko have three while he sends Tanjiro and Inosuke to find the demon’s weak spot. They find it but destroying it is proving to be a challenge since Enmu is protecting it with eyes that send Tanjiro back to sleep over and over to the point where he can’t tell dreams from reality. Inosuke doesn’t seem to be affected because of the boar head mask he wears so the eyes can’t locate his gaze as well as they can with Tanjiro and they manage to cut Enmu’s neck but this is only the beginning.
