Demon Whiskey (Whiskey Witches 0) by S.M. Blooding

Book Review

Title: Demon Whiskey (Whiskey Witches 0)

Author: S.M. Blooding

Genre: Fantasy/Paranormal

Rating: *****

Review: Demon Whiskey is the short novella prequel to the Whiskey Witches series and the synopsis sounds amazing so I couldn’t wait to get into it. We are introduced to Leslie Whiskey and her two children as well as her grandmother Alma. Leslie also lives with her niece Leah as her sister Paige is a demon summoner which makes her the most powerful kind of witch along with her mastery of all the elements. However, when a strange man appears on her doorstep telling her Paige might be in danger and to keep her eyes open, Leslie isn’t that concerned as Paige can take care of herself, but Paige is still her little sister.

As we cross the ¼ mark in the novel, I was intrigued by the “covens” in which the witches live and their gifts especially since Leslie’s children got their gifts young which doesn’t seem to be normal according to grandma Alma. As we approach the halfway mark in the novel, we learn that there are divides in the family especially between Leslie, Paige and their mother; Rachel. Rachel is an angel whisper and Paige summons demons which is why their mother left them when they were children. Now suddenly re-entering their lives when their children have presented their gifts and Leslie is sure Rachel is up to something, but Paige naively wants to give her a chance but since she is still summoning, she can’t be honest with her mother especially since summoning was what she was born to do.

As we cross into the second half of the novel, it turns out that Leslie was right. Rachel was after something, the children and their gifts but she only manages to get her hands-on Leah as Paige was naive enough to ignore her sister’s warnings about their mother. Paige is angry and disappointed when she learns what her mother has done but getting her daughter back might not be as easy as it seems, and the sisters are enraged enough to take down their mother for good.

As we approach the ¾ mark in the novel, Rachel takes custody of Leah by telling the judge who already hates the family that Paige is a demon summoner and gets custody of her granddaughter. Paige and Leslie try their hardest to get Leah back, but nothing seems to be working, and when Paige is offered a fresh start in Denver, she might take it but before that Rachel allows her to see Leah for the first-time months.

As we cross into the final section of the novel, things turn unexpectedly emotional and set us up for Whiskey Witches the first book in the series after the prequel and I can just see some potential plot twists that might come up during the series. I have a feeling that Paige despite everything that has happened is going to try and get her daughter back no matter what and her gift might be the key to getting Leah back, but I have no idea where the series is going to go. I am super excited to jump into book 1 as soon as possible.
