Title: Dragon School: Ancient Allies
Author: Sarah K. L. Wilson
Genre: YA/Fantasy/Adventure/Romance
Rating: *****
Review: So, after the very dramatic ending I was very excited to jump into Ancient Allies, although I have taken a short break from the series so I could read Ancient Allies and Pipe of Wings together. Ancient Allies opens with Amel summoning some help to save them from their predicament effectively saving her, Renn and Rakturan as well as the dragons but in order to help Savette back in the Dominion, they must first gather some allies to take back with them.
As Amel seems to be discovering powers of her own Rakturan asks for her assistance as a Purple in relaying a message to his uncle to see if he will aid them in the war, however, Amel is in unfamiliar territory and is feeling very lost but Raolcan is always by her side offering support and advice. As we cross the ¼ mark in the novel, both Rakturan and Amel have received new gifts allowing them to see the ones they care about are still alive and fighting for their freedom. Rakturan explains Amel’s mission and how important it is that she doesn’t fail, the fate of both countries may just depend on her.
Traveling through the strange lands Amel and Renn come across several interesting things including artifacts from the ancients, but they aren’t safe and Renn learns the hard way what happens when you tamper with things you shouldn’t. As we approach the halfway mark in the novel, Renn is injured but Amel has finally managed to reach their destination and meets Prince Gahteen, Rakturan’s Uncle and his daughter Jalla who agree to help Renn. However, the hostile conditions of the country soon find Amel and Renn in a difficult position once more and she isn’t sure she can get out of this without being seriously injured or killed along the way as Rakturan’s country works nothing like the Dominion and Amel is feeling more lost than ever.
As for meeting with the Prince and his daughter, it is decided that they will help Rakturan is he passes the test of the Kah’deem, so Amel and Jalla travel together to the meeting place and while Amel is confused by the rules of the domain, Jalla seems curious about how things work in the Dominion. As we approach the ¾ mark Rakturan accepts the test but is also challenged and as the test begins it seems the pair are locked in a battle of the wills and more than once Amel considers joining Rakturan in his trial but that may hinder more than help him considering everything that is at stake.
The Crescent Prince though isn’t stupid and has had a trick up his sleeve the entire time but Amel has faith in her friend, but she does join him in order to help him complete the trial, but it doesn’t go as planned. The ending of Ancient Allies was very interesting, and I can’t wait to dive into Pipe of Wings straight away. Highly recommend this series to all.
