Book Review
Title: Dragon School: Dragon Piper
Author: Sarah K. L. Wilson
Genre: YA/Fantasy/Romance/Adventure
Rating: ****
Review: The opening to Dragon Piper was great, it starts five days after the amazing stunt Amel pulled off and the end of Pipe of Wings but there is still a lot that needs to be done and a lot that couldn’t be undone even with Amel’s extraordinary gift.
As Amel slowly recovers from her injuries, the other dragon riders are planning to head to Vanika to see if they can reclaim the city with the help of Amel and her pipe. Amel also figures out that the different positions of the pipe’s arm summon different creatures and there is a setting that summons dragons. The gang and the dragons head out to Vanika but Amel’s injury is holding her back forcing her to take a back seat until they arrive at the city. However, getting to the city they realise they might be unprepared, but they know this city sits on the warrens that might be instrumental in transporting their armies to deal with their enemies.
As we approach the halfway mark in the novel, Amel is still getting visions but she has one of Hubric looking at the city of Cabradis and she realises her suspicion that Cabradis might be important could have been correct all along. In order to get into the city and acquire the information they need, they kidnap a boy named Tor. Amel manages to convince Tor to help them but at a price which both sides are willing to pay given what the rewards will be if they succeed.
As we cross into the second half of the novel, the group is re-joined by Hubric but Leng and Savette are still in need of help, although Leng is once again in a mysterious situation and I am not getting good feelings about what he is doing. In their battle to retake the city once again not everything goes to plan. While the pipe grants Amel power over the dragons she isn’t confident about how to use it and the consequences of using it for prolonged periods of time.
As we cross into the final section of the novel, the Lightbringers seems to have won the battle but they still have a war to fight and the arrival of Jalla and her forces aren’t helping the situation at all. While I am loving this series, I have felt the last 2 or 3 books have been very similar, it might have been a better reading experience if Ancient Allies and Pipe of Wings were one book rather than spreading it out. However, I still highly recommend this high fantasy series.
