Title: Every Heart A Doorway: Re-Read
Author: Seanan McGuire
Genre: YA/LGBT/Portal Fantasy
Rating: *****
Review: So, I have read this series before but with book 4 In an Absent Dream early next year I decided to re-read the series again as I re-read this series when I managed to get an arc of Beneath the Sugar Sky. Every heart opens with Nancy arriving at Elanor West’s home for Wayward Children, Nancy has been living in another world, but no one believes her and fears she is suffering from delusions. Learning about Nancy’s world and how passionately she feels for it is beautiful, the nicest thing though is the relationship between her and the Lord of the Dead. I know from previous readings that this book is full of representation, there is asexual rep, f/f relationship rep, transgender rep, as well as having many characters of different races present throughout the story.
As we cross the ¼ mark in the novel, my favourite four characters are still the same in Nancy, Sumi, Kade, and Jack. Also, re-reading this series I love Jack even more than I did before and I also understand what she is going through better and better in this book. When you learn more about the twins in Down Among the Sticks and Bones and then re-read Every Heart you can understand why Jack acts the way she does especially towards her sister.
As we cross into the second half of the novel, this portal fantasy gains a murder mystery element when Sumi is killed while I know who the killer is as I have read the books before, there really aren’t many clues to who it could be until later on. In the wake of Sumi’s death, Nancy, Kade, and Jack become a lot closer than before. We are given one of the biggest hints to who the killer is and upon first reading, it is so easy to miss but now it seems too obvious. However, the small group consisting of Christopher, Kade, Jack, and Nancy are slowly beginning to put the pieces of the puzzle together.
As we cross into the final section of the novel, Nancy puts the final pieces into place and now the group has to stop the killer before it is too late. When the killer’s identity is revealed we aren’t that shocked given what we know about the person yet the fact that this person is willing to go to such lengths to return home is astounding. If you haven’t read Every Heart a Doorway I highly recommend it and the rest of the series.
