Review: I didn’t know much about Fence before getting into it other than it follows fencing. We are following Nicholas who is the illegitimate child of a retired fencing champion as he gets into the prestigious Kings Row private school. As this is a fairly short graphic novel my review isn’t going to be overly long but I wanted to read the comics before getting into the new full-length novels based off these comics.

Nicholas comes from a very poor background and has always worked in exchange for free fencing lessons and he has finally been able to afford to enter the regional championships in order to get noticed and potentially get a scholarship to a good school. However, Nicholas has the unfortunate luck of being paired up against Seiji Katayama who is one of the best and currently remains unbeaten. Despite Nicholas attempts and secret heritage he loses 15-0 against Seiji and his hopes are dashed.

However, Nicholas does get noticed by Kings Row Boys School, a private school and gets in on a scholarship but his scholarship depends on him getting on the fencing team. I am not sure if Nicholas is aware that Kyle one of the boys from the regional championship is related to his father but he freaks out when he realises that Seiji is going to be his roommate at Kings Row. Overall, the first instalment of Fence was interesting and I will definitely be reading more and I can’t be the only one to wish for a potential relationship between Seiji and Nicholas at some point in the future of the series.
