Title: Fence: Volume 3 by C.S. Pacat
Genre: Graphic Novel, Sports, Humour
Rating: 3 Stars
Volume 2 of Fence introduced us to a lot more characters and two interesting storylines and I eager to see where they go. Volume 3 of Fence was very disappointing for me as it seems to be focusing too much on the sport and not enough on the characters. I mean Seiji and Nicholas are the main characters and we know virtually nothing about Seiji and very little about Nicholas. I was expecting a lot more backstory and character development in this instalment that just didn’t arrive.
That being said what we did get in this volume of Fence was interesting. We see the match ups for the school continue but when Seiji comes to watch one of Nicholas’ matches he realises that Nicholas fights in the very similar style to Jesse and Seiji wants to know why. Seiji and Nicholas actually get into a fight over this as Nicholas refuses to give up that secret despite Seiji having similar feelings towards Jesse and they have become a lot closer as friends.
Ultimately Nicholas isn’t picked for the main team as that is Harvard, Aiden and Seiji but he and Eugene are given the reverse positions. For Nicholas this brings him one step closer to being his father’s son the same way Jesse is. Jesse picks this exact moment to appear at the school which sets both Seiji and Nicholas on edge and I have a feeling in the next volume we might get to see if Jesse knows that Nicholas is his half-brother. I really liked the friendship dynamics and the introduction of quite a few LGBT characters but C. S. Pacat needs to spend more time on character development but I am hoping volume 4 can redeem the series.
