Review: Gemini is the fifth book in the Murders of the Zodiac series, and I was so excited to jump back into this world. It was strange to see the first perspective we get isn’t Leslie’s or Ryan’s but that of Janna. It turns out that Janna has a twin sister Keanna and both were killed in identical ways on opposite sides of the country so I’m thinking already that there is more than one killer in this book possibly a set of twins. We also get more perspectives from the victim’s that include Angel and her sister, Nyree & Elissa, Niña & Pinta and finally Norah and Emma Lynn. Ask these female sets of twins are killed in identical fashion, a knife in the heart, over several states so the police haven’t put it together yet but then we get Leslie’s perspective.
I really liked the perspectives of the victims as it provides a more human element rather than the police simply dealing with bodies, we begin to see them as people who had hopes and dreams before their lives were cruelly ended. It was interesting to learn that Leslie had witnessed a murder as a child and never stuff anything out of fear that he would come back and kill her too. Given everything that has been happening Leslie feels slightly overwhelmed, but she has a feeling that she might have some psychic abilities like Flora and decides to spend the night at Flora’s place to see if that is true. Flora, on the other hand, is very nervous as she has had similar feelings about Leslie but being new to her psychic abilities, she is nervous that she might read Leslie wrong or not get a reading from her at all.
As we cross the ¼ mark in the novel, it turns out that Leslie is psychic and her abilities are more powerful than Flora’s but she had repressed them due to traumatic events in her childhood but using her gifts we see three distinct outcomes for Leslie’s future and none of them are attractive and they throw off Leslie’s emotions but the future isn’t set in stone but no word of the Gemini killings had reached the police yet. When Leslie and Ryan head out to the first two crime scenes separately we see them reconnect as friends after her mental breakdown, but we can see that there is something more developing between them but as Ryan is engaged to Shea, they are holding themselves back, but I don’t know how much longer that is going to last for.
As we cross into the second half of the novel, Leslie’s gift is getting stronger as she is seen interacting with a few of the victims as they point her in the right direction but at a critical point her attention is drawn elsewhere making her miss the killer hiding right under her nose but there is something wrong with Shea and the pair fly back home almost immediately, as it has to be serious for Flora to call Ryan about it.
As we approach the ¾ mark in the novel, Leslie and Ryan manage to uncover the killer’s identities but now they must find them before they can complete their mission and hopefully throw off the Zodiac Master and end his twisted came once and for all. However, Ryan is having a moral crisis while Leslie is learning to cope with her newly acquired gift. Everything seems to be heating up in this book as Leslie and Ryan are learning more about the killers and more quickly than they ever have before thanks to Leslie but the question of the Zodiac Master’s identity and what he truly wants is still a mystery I hope Morgan taps into very soon.
As we cross into the final section of the novel, many things come to light specifically that the Zodiac Master knows more about Leslie than she does, and he can’t wait for her to discover the truth about herself. We also see him setting up the next set on murders that will take place in Cancer, which I can’t wait to read. There seems to be much more at stake especially for Ryan since in a little under 8 months he is going to become a father himself and I have a feeling he is going to have to make some difficult decisions regarding his career and what he is willing to sacrifice in order to capture the Zodiac Master.
