Book Review
Title: Genesis by Seven Rue
Genre: Romance, Erotic
Rating: 2.5 Stars
I recently read Forbidden and Baby Bird by Seven Rue and loved them so I had high hopes for Genesis that it didn’t really live up to. While the story was interesting I think it suffered from being underdeveloped in terms of writing, characters and the romance which left me feeling unsatisfied and disappointed especially after the stunning duet I previously read from the author. We are introduced to Otis who take custody of his three year old niece after his sister, Evangelina is sent to prison. One of the first things Otis does with the little girl is rename her, Genesis to celebrate her new beginning. At first we follow them through the early years of Otis taking care of Genesis which was surprisingly wholesome to see and wish it would have been expanded on a little.
However, we jump forward twelve years to when Genesis is now 18 are preparing to go on a long road trip with Otis, however, she has recently realised that she feels more for Otis than just being his ward and she wants to pursue a relationship with him. Genesis despite being the shyer of the two makes a move on Otis and he quickly gives into her as within the universe of the book their relationship isn’t illegal although it is frowned upon. During the early stages of the road trip everything seems to be going great although Genesis beings to wonder if they are being followed which does happen to be the case but they don’t figure it out until Genesis literally gets kidnapped.
The man kidnapping Genesis is a man named Colson who wants to take Genesis home although he calls her by the name her mother gave her which was Evangelina, narcissism at its best. Colson claims to be Genesis’ father when he is eventually stopped by Otis and arrested by the police and Genesis does want to press charges because she doesn’t need anyone except Otis. In the epilogue we get to briefly see Genesis pregnant with Otis’ child before the novel ends. Overall, the premise of book was good but it needed to be expanded especially the paranoia of being followed and the eventually kidnapping. I also would have liked the final sex scene to be more in-depth especially given the traumatic experience Genesis and Otis went through and I would have liked an extended epilogue as well seeing more of pregnant Genesis and a doting Otis. However, the book as a whole left me majorly underwhelmed, I haven’t written off Seven Rue as an author yet but this might the case if I am disappointed with future books from the author.
