So, the Goodreads Choice Awards are open for 2020. I thought I would do a small post on my contenders for the winning position in each category and the books I am also looking to read. Once the winners are announced I am also going to be taking part in Emily Foxx’s Goodreads Reading Challenge where she attempts to read one or more books from every category including the winners and runners up.
Best Fiction:
In this category there is one book that I have pegged as the winner which is:
1. My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell
For the runners up or other potential winners I have:
1. The Midnight Library by Matt Haig
2. The Glass Hotel by Emily St. John Mandel
All three of these are on my TBR right now and I will definitely be reading them in the near future.
Best Mystery & Thriller:
So there are a lot of good books in this category so I don’t see a clear winner but my top three from this category are:
1. One by One by Ruth Ware
2. Home Before Dark by Riley Sager
3. The Guest List by Lucy Foley
Best Historical Fiction:
This isn’t a genre I read a lot from so I am just going to choose a few books which seems interesting:
1. The Book of Longings by Sue Monk Kidd
2. The Evening and the Morning by Ken Follett
Best Fantasy:
Now, this is a genre I read a lot from a most of the books here are on my TBR but my top 3 would be:
1. Rhythm of War by Brandon Sanderson
2. The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V. E. Schwab
3. The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow
Best Romance:
Yet another category I don’t read anything from and there is only one book I would personally consider reading:
1. Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall
Best Science Fiction:
Another category I read a lot from so here’s my top 3:
1. Network Effect by Martha Wells
2. To Sleep in a Sea of Stars by Christopher Paolini
3. Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir
Best Horror:
This is a category I am very excited to read from at the end of this year and I struggled to just choose 3:
1. The Year of the Witching by Alexis Henderson
2. The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones
3. The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix
Best Humour:
Humour is a category I actively avoid, I don’t mind humour worked into the plots of other books but I never read books focused solely on humour so I probably won’t read anything from this category.
Best Graphic Novel:
I don’t read a lot of graphic novels but the ones I have read I love, however, this year there are only 2 I would read and there is a clear winner among them:
1. Heartstopper Volume 3 by Alice Oseman
2. Basketful of Heads by Joe Hill
Best Poetry:
I don’t read poetry but there is a poetry collection by an author I like and another from an author who I have read poetry from before:
1. Break Your Glass Slippers by Amanda Lovelace
2. On the Horizon by Lois Lowry
Best Debut:
Another category I am looking forward to but I am omitting book that appear in other categories:
1. Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas
2. The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart
Best Young Adult Fiction:
My comfortable category:
1. The Gravity of Us by Phil Stamper
2. One of Us is Next by Karen M. McManus
3. The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
4. A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson
Best Young Adult Fantasy & Science Fiction:
My MOST comfortable category:
1. These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong
2. Children of Virtue and Vengeance by Tomi Adeyemi
3. Midnight Sun by Stephanie Myer
4. The Kingdom of Back by Marie Lu
5. Starsight by Brandon Sanderson
Best Middle Grade & Children's:
This is a category that is funny for me. I have read a lot of MG and loved them but I don’t read them often:
1. Hollowpox: The Hunt for Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend
2. The Trials of Apollo: The Tower of Nero by Rick Riordan
These categories are one I won’t be reading from Best Non-Fiction, Best Autobiography/Memoir, Best History, Best Science & Technology, Best Food and Best Picture Book.
