Haikyuu Season 1, Episode 4: “The View From The Summit” Review

Episode 4 is the beginning of the 3-on-3 match, one team consists of Kageyama, Hinata and Tanaka and the other has Yamaguchi, Tsukishima and Daichi. While Tanaka’s team has the better offense, Daichi’s team has a far better defence. While Hinata and Kageyama get in some early points, Hinata soon finds himself up against the massive wall that is Tsukishima and begins to get frustrated as does Kageyama. However, Sugawara gives Kageyama some advice to try and use Hinata’s abilities to his advantage and initially he doesn’t get it but when it clicks he has an idea.

However, Tsukishima isn’t being quiet this whole match, he explains to Hinata why Kageyama is called the King of the Court and who gave him the nickname. It turns out his supposed teammates at Kitagawa Daiichi gave him the name as a way of calling him a self-centred dictator, as in one match he was so determined to win, he forgot about his teammates inability to keep up with him which led to the them refusing to play with him and Kageyama getting benched. Kageyama admits that the thought of being benched is extremely freighting as like Hinata, he wants to be on the court for as long as he can and he is determined to do whatever it takes to achieve this. This little speech reflects the dream he has at the beginning of the episode and his anxiety around being benched.

Hinata counters this by saying this was in the past and he has no problem hitting any ball Kageyama decides to send his way. This gives Kageyama an idea and he tells Hinata, to find a space where there is no blockers, run as fast as he can and jump as he can, Kageyama also tells him not to watch the ball as he will be deliver the ball to Hinata. The whole episode has been leading up to this moment and it was delightful to see Hinata hit the super-fast spike that Kageyama sets to him. However, Daichi is the one to notice that from the moment he jumped to the moment he spiked, Hinata had his eyes closed. This shocks everyone including Kageyama as it meant that Kageyama made a pinpoint toss of the ball into the palm of Hinata’s hand and that he swung with perfect accuracy in order to hit it. When Kageyama asks him why, Hinata honestly replies saying he can’t help but follow the ball if his eyes are open and that he has no choice but to trust Kageyama 100%.

Kageyama and Hinata try to replicate this move but it doesn’t seem to be working until Kageyama tunes right into the movements of everyone on the court. As Hinata approaches the blockers, he avoids them by sprinting to the other side of the court and as he is the fastest on the team at the moment, he manages to get around Tsukishima and score again. Here we see the episode name as Hinata can literally see the view from summit when he overcomes the blockers and scores a point for his team. While the 3-on-3 has only just begun this was the first episode where we see an actual match take place even if it’s a training match, but this set the ground work for the matches to come.
