In A Coward’s Anxiety we re-join the rest of the 3-on-3 match, with their newly combined skills, Kageyama and Hinata manages to take the first set and the quick attack only gets stronger in the second set leading to them winning. After the match, Tanaka asks Daichi and Sugawara if they knew what would happen when Kageyama and Hinata combined skills, and both didn’t have a clue. However, Daichi sums it up best saying he was hoping for 10 + 10 and they turned out to be 10 x 10. Kageyama and Hinata are also show good sportsmanship after the match when Hinata asks Tsukishima to shake hands and he refuses as it was their own fault they needed the match in the first place due to their actions in the dean’s presence. The small scene as Hinata tries to force Tsukishima to shake his hand is hilarious and when he manages it, Tsukishima’s face is the funniest thing I have ever seen.
After the match we meet the team’s faculty advisor, Takeda, who tells the team he has arranged a practise match with team ranked in the top four of the prefecture; Aoba Johsei, commonly referred to as Seijoh They agreed on the condition that Kageyama plays setter the entire match even though he isn’t the team’s official setter. Suga takes this news surprising well as he wants to see how effective Kageyama and Hinata are against a really strong team which adds a lot of pressure to Hinata who basically has a panic attack and blows a fuse over it. There is also a lot of anxiety for Kageyama as a lot of his former teammates for Kitagawa Daiichi go to Seijoh.
The scenes from the club room are amazing as we see how deep the anxiety runs for Hinata and the rest of the team try not to put any unnecessary pressure on Hinata, however, Kageyama has absolutely no self-awareness and sometimes he doesn’t understand how his words will affect others, especially Hinata. Seeing Hinata’s stomach problems related to his anxiety was so relatable for me as I have struggled with anxiety too, also the realisation he tried to wear his jacket on his legs and then left wearing Tanaka’s trousers was amazing. The episode ends with the team on the bus preparing to head to Seijoh, Hinata isn’t feeling well as he didn’t sleep the previous night, even after his younger sister told him he was being too noisy (she’s adorable by the way), which ends with him vomiting in Tanaka’s lap. Daichi, Suga and Kageyama realise that this is worse than what any of them could have predicted and they are worried for how Hinata will perform in the match itself.
