Haikyuu Season 1, Episode 6: “An Amusing Team” Review

The opening of episode 6 was hilarious as Tanaka is forced to change into his shorts as Hinata apologises. Despite his best intentions Tanaka actually makes Hinata’s anxiety worse, however, the highlight was seeing team mom, Suga, berate Kageyama for wanting to force some sense into Hinata, even going as far as telling Tanaka to keep the “simpleton” away from Hinata. We also get to meet some Seijoh players, one of which is Kindaichi who Hinata remembers from his match against Kitagawa Daiichi, although he and Tanaka refer to him as turnip-kun as his hairstyle resembles a turnip.

We also get a small scene where Tanaka almost manages to ease Hinata’s anxiety by telling him the rest of the team are there to support him but messes it up when he mentions he is alone when he serves. After leaving the bathroom for the second time, Hinata runs right into Kindaichi and they spend a few minutes moaning about how oppressing Kageyama is, but they differ on his tosses, Kindaichi says they are the worst while Hinata thinks they are amazing. Kindaichi writes this off, thinking that Hinata has never hit them in a real match before but Tanaka warns him to wait for the match before finalising his opinion on how much Kageyama has changed. However, a comment made by Kindaichi, stating that anything Kageyama doesn’t need to win, he discards sends Hinata back into the bathroom. Daichi and Kiyoko try to help him but he just ends up blowing a fuse just before the match is due to start, which doesn’t bode well for the team.

Hinata makes a lot of mistakes in the first set leading to Seijoh taking a lot of point, and at match point, the worst possible moment, it is Hinata’s turn to serve. Somehow, he manages to serve it straight into the back of Kageyama’s head and Hinata’s peaceful face literally says I’m going to die and Kageyama’s look of death confirms this. As he confronts Hinata despite Tanaka and Tsukishima making fun of him, he asks if Hinata can think of anything scarier than hitting him in the back of the head and he can’t, which immediately quells his anxiety and he realises that he had nothing to worry about. Tanaka even confirms this saying they all know he isn’t a great player but they are working together to make up for that fact. Since Seijoh took the first set, Hinata knows he has to do better in the second set if they want any chance of winning, however, the first quick doesn’t go as planned as Kageyama made the toss too high. His apology to Hinata completely throws off his old teammates as the old Kageyama would never do that but it is the beginning of their counter attack. With the current line up consisting of Hinata, Kageyama, Tsukishima, Ennoshita, Daichi and Tanaka, they have a good offensive and defensive rotation which allows them to easily take the second set.

Kageyama warns the rest of the team going into the final set, that Seijoh’s setter isn’t their official setter, just as Oikawa makes an appearance and it is clear from Kageyama’s reaction that they have history, but just as things are getting good the episode ends. I really liked seeing Kageyama face his former teammates as a completely different person especially when he shatters the image they had of him, seeing him interact with his teammates, thanking them and apologising when necessary really throws them off and this only develops as the series progresses but I can’t wait to re-watch the first showdown between Oikawa and Kageyama.
