Hannibal Season 1, Episode 9: Trou Normand Review

Episode 9 really starts to build off the doubts and insecurities that Will has in the previous episode. This really focuses on Will, Abigail and Hannibal and the secrets they are respectively trying to hide and come to terms with. This mainly applies to Hannibal and Abigail, but it does apply to Will later in the episode. This episode starts with Will being called to a crime scene, which is a human totem pole made on 17 bodies in various stages of decay apart from the crown, which is a fresh victim.

Will, as he tries to see through the killer’s eyes, loses time, several hours in fact and ends up at Hannibal’s office where he relays his fears to his friend. The next day he asks Jack is anything seemed wrong with him and judging by Jack’s response, Will from the outside seemed perfectly normal. He sees that there is a connection between the first victim and the last which does lead to a major break in the case later on, but Will’s problems are only getting worse. Meanwhile, Abigail is considering telling her story to Freddie Lounds for the money from a book deal, as all the money left to her by her parents and the sale of the house has gone to the families of the murdered victims of her father. During this time Nicholas’ body has already been found and now Abigail is under suspicion yet again. Alana plays a huge role by unconsciously protecting Abigail from Jack’s suspicion.

As the episode progresses Will is trying to unravel this new case but it seems to come together to easily for his liking and it turns out the killer is the real father of the last victim, although he didn’t know it and he only killed the last victim in order to get caught as he was tired of hiding. Will seems to be losing more time as he is giving a lecture but in reality, he is speaking to an empty room. After being found by Alana, she confesses that she has feelings for him but can’t get involved with him because he seems too unstable and it wouldn’t be good for either of them and for the first time Will agrees.

The ending of this episode was by far the best moment as we see Freddie, Will, Abigail and Hannibal sit down together for a meal and Hannibal seems disturbed by the fact that Freddie is a vegetarian. However, the big part of this is Abigail turning to Hannibal for comfort when she admits to herself that she was involved in her father’s murders and breaks down because she doesn’t have to hide it anymore. Hannibal also confesses he knew he was just waiting for her to confirm it when she felt safe enough with him and we can see a true father/daughter relationship blooming between the pair. Knowing that Hannibal has a fierce protectiveness over children and innocents from the books I highly approve of this relationship. Will has also discovered that Abigail is responsible for Nicholas’ death and Hannibal confesses he helped her hide the body but rather than turning them in, Will helps protect them and keeps the secret, for his own sanity if nothing else. I think that Will feels the same way for Abigail as Hannibal does and he also values Hannibal’s friendship and guidance and couldn’t bear to lose one of them let alone both of them, which is what would happen if he went to Jack with this information.
