Hannibal Season 2, Episode 5: Mukōzuke Review

Episode 5 definitely dropped a bombshell early on, as Freddie Lounds receives an anonymous tip about another murder, so she heads to the observatory tower where Miriam Lass’ arm was found and where she helped Chilton cling to life after he had been gutted by Abel Gideon. There she finds another body, but she recognises this woman as one of Jack’s team and immediately calls him. When Jack arrives she tells him to send someone else in but Jack can’t do that. Jack is already emotionally fragile after Bella’s suicide attempt and Beverly’s brutal murder causes him to break down in tears. Jack isn’t the only one affected as we see the rest of the team upset by her death and she even appears to Will in one of his daydreams when he learns of her death.

Beverly has been sliced up and mounted onto slides, on display for anyone to see. Jack knows he needs Will’s opinion on the scene, and he doesn’t give Jack much help as he feels responsible for her death but can’t tell Jack who he believes the Ripper is as he knows Jack won’t believe him. He says his goodbyes to his friend and tells Jack that organs will be missing. As Price and Zeller investigate the murder of their friend they learn that the kidneys in Beverly’s body aren’t hers but belong to the Mural Killer; James Grey.  This whole episode is a huge game of back and forth between Hannibal and Will, each trying to outdo the other and prove that “he” is the smarter man. However, Beverly’s death does something to Will that Hannibal didn’t plan for. Will goes on the offensive.

As he is now Chilton’s exclusive patient, he asks that Abel Gideon is returned to the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane and with this, the hospital which was already a hotbed of deception and surveillance descends into utter chaos. Will attempts to manipulate both Abel and Dr. Chilton. Hannibal tries to manipulate Chilton and Abel. Abel tries to manipulate Alana Bloom. Sometimes there’s a third party listening in on these interactions; sometimes there’s not. Everyone achieves varying degrees of success, but once the points are tallied, “Mukozuke” counts as yet another win for Hannibal. Will’s motive for getting Abel Gideon back is to prove that neither of them is the Chesapeake Ripper and points the finger at Hannibal. His plan backfires as Gideon is in no mood to give up the murderous identity he has built around him and even takes steps to protect Hannibal when Will decides to turn to murder after all.

It turns out that Will’s admirer has been under his nose all along in the form of a deranged orderly. He explains to Will that he joined the hospital in order to be around others like him but maintain his freedom. He also explains to Will the freedom of hiding in plain sight, which is exactly how Hannibal hasn’t been caught yet. Now that he finally has an ally who believes him and doesn’t plan on skipping town, Will decides to leverage this tiny amount of social capital into revenge for Beverly. He issues a death sentence on his tormentor, though as his vision of sprouting stag’s horn shows, he’s well aware of the morally compromising nature of adapting Hannibal’s own tactics against him.

This conversation is overheard by Abel who immediately tells Alana who tells Jack and the pair attempt to track Hannibal down before things go bad once again. We see the orderly tranquilize Hannibal at the swimming pool and then we see him in a Christ-like pose, stood on a bucket, a noose around his neck and his wrists slashed. The orderly doesn’t seem particularly bothered by the fact that he has the wrong man; he’s successfully corrupted Will, and he can take credit for Hannibal’s crimes. Given the choice between kicking the bucket out from underneath himself or bleeding out, Hannibal faces what the orderly deems an adequate punishment for a traitor. The orderly and Will’s relationship seems very genuine and even though Will knows he isn’t a killer like this man, he needs a friend more than ever right now especially a friend with the guts to take on the real Chesapeake Ripper.

As things look like they might be heading south for Hannibal, rescue comes just in the nick of time, though, and Hannibal lives to see another day. However, we’re left with is the knowledge that Will’s experiences have finally caught up to him and whether or not he started as a murderer, both Abel and the orderly point out is irrelevant because of what he has done. In Will’s mind, Hannibal, Jack, Kade, and Chilton have turned him into one, they are all the enemy he is fighting against.
