Book Review

Title: Jack Frost (The Immortal Warriors Book 2) by Rebecca F. Kenney

Genre: Fantasy, Romance, Erotic

Rating: 3.5 Stars

The second book in The Immortal Warriors series is following the legend of Jack Frost. We are introduced to Emery who is a climate activist and cinematographer filming in Antarctica. She gets separated from her group and almost dies in a blizzard when she stumbles upon the ice palace belonging to Jack Frost. As she is suffering from the cold she wakes him up from what turns out to be a magical sleep to restore his powers so he can help her which he does giving her the Chill so she doesn’t feel the effects of the cold anymore but she is also gifted with True Sight allowing her to see the supernatural beings normally hidden from humans which she isn’t keen on at first.

After saving her life, Jack immediately becomes very attached to Emery following her everywhere since being close to her restores his power quicker but he doesn’t think much of it right now. Emery finds this very annoying as most of the time other people can’t see Jack but he does allow it several times in order to make Emery let him tag along for things when she is trying to get rid of him. Emery isn’t good with relationships as she has been treated poorly by boyfriends in the past so she becomes very defensive at Jack’s inappropriate jokes and innuendos but there is a lot of back and forth banter between the pair. Jack eventually beings to explain what he is and how he has been locked in a centuries long war with the fire goddess, Auxesia which he is losing because she is a lot more powerful than him and Emery wants to help him but it is too dangerous for her to even consider it in Jack’s opinion.

Jack seems to think that Emery has some magical ability since she restores his powers very quickly and she helps him heal after several battles with Auxesia which is coupled with lots of shameless flirting on Jack’s part. Jack wants a relationship with Emery but she is holding herself back from it and after an argument she asks Jack to leave which he does almost for an entire day. During the time Jack is gone Emery comes to realise her feelings for him before he returns and takes her to the work gala she is attending. There Jack under an alias sells a sculpture of Emery and she finally gives in to her feeling for Jack which was delightful to see. However, Jack is pulled into another battle with Auxesia which have been getting more and more dangerous and he is heavily injured. By the time we reach the final battle, Auxesia has the upper hand almost killing both Emery and Jack but Emery transforms into a frost deity like Jack and goes after Auxesia after doing what she can for Jack. Emery easily beats Auxesia draining her power and leaving her to think about the offer of restoring the balance between the fire and frost deities which is their original purpose. In the time Auxesia isn’t an issue Emery and Jack have two children together and their friends eventually find out what they are but love them anyway. Auxesia does make a reappearance but Emery essentially tells her to get a life which she seems to consider before telling them they are expecting their third child and disappearing. Overall, Jack Frost wasn’t bad but it didn’t have the suspense of The Gargoyle Prince or the wholesome element of Sleepy Hollow but was still worth the read and I can’t wait to read the Peter Pan retellings.
