June Reviews

So I read a disappointing 9 books in June but with both the Book Junkie Trials and the Reading Rush happening in July I am hoping to have my best reading month of the year.

Royally Cursed (Vampire Princess #2) by Cameron Drake **** – It has been a while since I read Vampire Princess, but I remember enjoying it even if I didn’t totally love it, so I have decided to continue on with the series. The synopsis of Royally Cursed does sound more interesting than the first book and I am eager to see how the series ends although there is another book scheduled to come out soon. We know that Sophie/Sasha had to break up with Dylan in the previous novel because his family is Fae, but he still loves her, and we also see that she is having serious trouble controlling her thirst as she is now drinking more blood than the other 3 vampires living with her combined. However, keeping the appearance of being human means she has finals and prom to deal with on top of everything else.

2. Rogue Prince by Cameron Drake ***** – The opening to Rogue Prince was interesting after the cliffhanger at the end of Royally Cursed but the stakes are getting higher for Sasha and she must put her heart aside in order to do what is right for her people, and the people she cares about. With a bond with both Dylan and Maxim, she can hear their thoughts and feel their emotions and she is especially conflicted over Maxim’s return given the revelations in Royally Cursed. Sasha also has gained the ability to give other people gifts or bring out gifts they already have, we see this when she gives Caleb the gift of darkness and brings out Dylan’s gifts which are also developing at a rapid pace.

3. To Serve My Alien Man by Sabrina Kade ***** – So, this is a short novella in the Rebels of Sidyth series and this also focuses on Layla and Dolan, while I didn’t love this couple in their own story, I was excited to see more from this world and all of these characters. Despite being less than 50 pages long I really loved this side to Layla and Dolan’s relationship. The whole story centres around Layla’s insecurities while she is pregnant especially regarding her weight and while she never had issues with her weight before this does seem to be a major issue for Layla as it is with a lot of women. However, Dolan doesn’t react well to this as he sees Layla as the most beautiful, but he also doesn’t understand human insecurities which makes the situation even more difficult to deal and often leads to one or both of them storming off.

4. Twisted Saga 1 (Books 1 – 3) by Jo Ho ***** – As this is a bind up of the first three novels in the Twisted series, I will be reviewing each book individually as I have done with other bind ups in the past. I didn’t know much about the Twisted Saga before starting it, but we know from the synopsis that it follows Marley. What Doesn’t Kill You (Twisted Book 1) The opening couple of chapters to What Doesn’t Kill You were dark and gritty, and I absolutely loved them, and I hope that they are setting the tone for the rest of the novel. We are introduced to something that likes hunting and killing people by snapping their necks and it has been around for hundreds of years, we get all this before we are introduced to our protagonist Marley Gray who is studying at Blackville University.

5. My Lover is a Murderous Demon by D. S. Gramme **** – This story is only 26 pages long, but the title really grabbed me. The follows Aria who seems to be the murderous demon, one night the unsuspecting Shigeru witnesses her killing three men and while she tries to kill him, he manages to evade her blade surprising Aria. Despite everything, he invites her to dinner when Shigeru is beaten up by some local thugs which further surprised Aria as she knows he is a skilled swordsman, but he invites her back for dinner the following night which I have a feeling that despite her harsh words she will accept. During this scene, we learn Aria works as an assassin of sorts for Lord Oboro and he is intrigued by Aria’s relationship with Shigeru and decides to see what comes of it.

6. Love Row by Brandi Aga *** – Yet another short romance story from Booksprout but this one is set during the zombie apocalypse which was intriguing. We are introduced to Wyla and Leven; a couple who are witnesses to the zombie apocalypse ripping through their small town, but Leven’s instincts keep them alive but as the winter moves in, they decide to brave a trip back to their old apartment to salvage anything they left behind. There they meet Haze; a man travelling alone after he lost his fiancé and the trio decides to travel to Dallas together and despite Wyla being hesitant she trusts Leven but knowing this is an MFM romance we know Haze is going to be integrated into the romance very soon.

7. The Darkest Deep by Ashlee Nicole Bye **** – So I didn’t know much about the Darkest Deep other than it is a YA reverse harem romance. We know this story follows Delta the princess of the Sea Court as she enjoys her freedom before her ascension ceremony where she will be named Princess Heir. We learn that when Delta becomes Queen, she will have four consorts and Hurley and Loch are hoping to be two of them as they have been her best friends for years and Delta is undeniably attracted to both of them, but she also has a huge crush of Tasman her personal guard who seems really uptight, but he does have Delta’s safety at heart. There is also Wade; the Sea Court’s ambassador who Delta finds extremely annoying. It is on an ordinary night when Hurley, Loch and Delta head to a party with Tasman in tow that we learn that the three friends have had a strange friendship that borders on a relationship, but it works for them, however, some cutting comments for Tasman really upsets Delta but then something happens that changes everything.

8. A House of Cards (Undercity Chronicles #1) by Savannah Skye ***** – The opening of A House of Cards was brilliant, we are introduced to Hana Spear whose best friend Cassandra “Cassie” was a vampire who was killed. In search of answers and some closure, Hana travels to New York only to be jumped by some vampires and rescued by the police. We learn that Cassie is accused of being a blood runner or a vampire who illegally gets human blood to sell to other vampires, but Hana refuses to believe this. We also learn that Hana is targeted because Cassie apparently hid away a large sum of money that many are trying to get their hands on, but Hana has no idea about the money. It is lucky for her a hunky vampire cop named Avery comes to her rescue several times and the pair form an alliance while Hana is trying to work out what Cassie was involved in and why she seems to be the main target for the powerful vampires.

9. We are Blood and Thunder by Kesia Lupo ***** – I picked up We are Blood and Thunder knowing little to nothing about it, but the cover was intriguing. The opening was interesting as we are introduced to the world of Valorian and Duke’s forest. We learn that mages are common in this world and they are categorized by the colour of their magic, we are introduced to Lena who is a cryptling due to unusual black mark on her cheek and her master Vigo is a cryptling because he is a cripple, cryptling are kept below ground in the dark and have to wear a veil when above ground so they can’t be seen. We see Lena’s life before and after the storm cloud, the storm cloud is rumoured to have been created by magic, so the Justice outlawed magic and mages are often sentenced to death. The year before Lena comes of age, she is sentenced to death for being a mage and while Vigo gives his life to buy her time as she has to escape into the toxic atmosphere of Duke’s forest. It is there she encounters Constance for the first time, who is an open mage, and this seems to be the beginning of an unlikely adventure for the girls.
