Title: Kiss the Fae (Vicious Faeries Book 1) by Natalia Jaster
Genre: Fantasy, Romance, Erotica
Rating: 4.25 Stars
This is the Double Booked book club pick for October and I was excited to get into it, however, I do have a major love, hate relationship with books about fae and I have Sarah J. Maas to thank for that but I am willing to give it a go. We are introduced to Lark and he two sisters, Juniper and Cove who have to deal with the fallout of Lark ended up in bed with a poacher. In the aftermath, Lark makes her escape in the Faerie lands, through her we learn of the Fables where in the Trapping humans wiped out a lot of the Fae but three escaped who now rules over the Faerie lands. One who rules the sky, One rules over the forest and the last rules over the deep and I don’t think it is a coincidence that the sisters are named after these domains. Larks are birds so they fly, juniper grows in the forest and a cove is found near the sea which might hint at the relationships to come later in the novel and the series overall. While in the Faerie lands someone tries to lure Lark away but she is able to resist it which is normally impossible for humans and the sisters odd appearances make me think there is more to them than meets the eye especially when Juniper and Cove follow Lark in the Faerie lands to find her. By doing this they have broken the laws of the land and the Fae are within their rights to come after them now which terrifies all of the sisters.
After returning home, they are frightened when each sister experiences the others disappearing in the blink of an eye and when Lark runs into the forest looking for her sisters she encounter Cerulean, the ruler of the Sky. Cerulean tricks Lark into giving up her name and the names of her sisters meaning they can be dragging back into the Faerie realm at any time. Soon after each sister receives a letter from one of the rulers, compelling them back to the Faerie lands. At the threshold they realise they are being split up and each much survive a game designed by the Fae but there is more to this as if one of them fails, they all fail. Here we solely follow Lark as she heads into the mountain range and encounters Cerulean once more and he sets her the task of climbing to the top of the mountain which is also set out like a maze but she soon realises that nothing in these lands can be taken for granted as even a trusted path might betray her. We also see that there might be some history between Lark and Cerulean as being around him sparks half forgotten memories in her although they don’t make sense to her right now. I also can’t deny the sexual tension between the pair and Lark even admits that being close to Cerulean is arousing for her but she denies it because of how ruthless and sadistic the Fae are. I like how the Fae are portrayed as both sensual and cruel as it sticks close to their description and personalities in folklore.
Cerulean continue to torment Lark as she tries to complete her task but we can see them both softening towards the other even if they don’t want it to happen. For Lark, she is seeing a more human side to Cerulean but she never forgets what he is and what he is capable of even for a minute because it could end in her death or the torment and death of her sisters. For Cerulean, he is coming to see that Lark isn’t like the humans that took part in the Trapping as she was actively against it even as a child and that belief still holds true. When Cerulean rescues her from a lethal fall, she is taken to his home where she finds out he has a sanctuary just like hers back home for the animals of the Fae lands that were injured or disabled during the Trapping and for the first time Lark feels real sympathy for the Fae. However, we soon learn that Cerulean isn’t the first Fae she has met as she met another Fae boy when she was young and she developed a friendship with him over time and eventually fell in love with him risking everything to set him free and taking a single feather for his mask as payment which she treasures to this day. Despite setting the boy free he was recaptured and killed which broke Lark’s heart and it changed my opinion on her as a character. At first for me she was sassy and stubborn but there wasn’t anything special about her, however, since learning she is capable and willing to love someone who is Fae without judgement makes me think that her relationship with Cerulean would be a really wholesome one and I can’t wait for it to begin taking shape as the tension between this pair is honestly driving me mad. The scene where Cerulean plays for the animals and they seem to accept Lark was beautiful as it reminded her of being home and it showed Cerulean who is truly is as a person because animals are often very good judges of character and they begin to discuss their respective pasts which might be when Lark slips up or confession to knowing another Fae boy in her youth.
Seeing Lark try to complete her tasks at the same time she realises who Cerulean truly is to her and reveal it to him was amazing. Watching the relationship develop between them was great the spicy scenes were divine. However, it isn’t a straightforward HEA as Lark still has to climb the mountain or die and while Cerulean does try to free she can’t abandon her sisters and completes the task forcing Cerulean to let her return to her world even though it might mean the end of his. Lark isn’t passive though, she returns home determined to find a way to love Cerulean and save the Eternal Wild from disappearing and in the end makes the choice to return and find a way to unite their worlds without having to sacrifice mortals for the sake of their land as she loves them both dearly. We also get to meet Puck, the Ruler of the Woods for the first time and Lark questions him about Juniper. While he doesn’t give anything away Cerulean knows his brother well and knows that Juniper must be doing well for Puck to see information from Lark but we haven’t heard anything about Cove. The other two books in this series are going to be following Juniper and Cove’s stories but there is also an overarching plot of finding a way for the Fae lands to coexist with the human lands that I am eager to see more of. Overall, Kiss the Fae was an interesting start to the series and I am anxious to see how the other sisters have been doing while we have been following Lark.
