Konohana Kitan Volume 2 by Sakuya Amano

Book Review

Title: Konohana Kitan Volume 2

Author: Sakuya Amano

Genre: Manga

Rating: ***

Review: So I read volume 1 of Konohana Kitan back in May and I loved it, we are still following Yuzu working at Konohanatei, a hot-springs inn for yokai. So, like the previous volume the manga is split into 4 sections ghost stories, summer festival part 1 & 2 and a day off.

Ghost stories is pretty simple, Yuzu and the other fox spirits that work at Konohanatei have a day off, so they decide to stay up late telling ghost stories, yet they accidentally summon a ghost to the hotel. This ghost happens to be a human girl who never had any friends and she decides to haunt the hotel until she makes a friend but because she can change her appearance to be anyone, so the workers have a hard time tracking her down. When Yuzu encounters the ghost, she knows that she is the ghost despite having a different appearance and she helps the girl move on even offering to go with her to the other side, but the girl makes sure Yuzu stays behind.

Section 2 and 3 are two halves of one greater story about the summer festival taking place close to the hotel. While some of the workers want to attend, the hotel is open, so they have to work. It is Satsuki and Kiri would come up with the idea that they can go to the festival in small groups, so they can work and go to the festival. The festival isn’t that interesting although you do learn some interesting things about Japanese culture, however, I really enjoyed the relationship between Yuzu and Natsume. While this is labelled as a yuri manga I have a feeling that Natsume is a boy despite being called her. Natsume is also my favourite character as she understands not only the guests but the other workers. Natsume also has the ability to be quite wild and free most of the time but be serious when it is needed.

The final section is all about the day off the workers have and how they spend it down at the river where they encounter some mysterious creatures and all the hi-jinks that ensue afterwards. Overall, I still liked Konohana Kitan, but this didn’t really live up to the first volume for me. However, I do have an ARC of volume 3 so I think that might determine whether or not I continue this series.
