Book Review
Title: Promised (Rebels of Sidyth, #3)
Author: Sabrina Kade
Genre: Sci-Fi/Romance
Rating: *****
Review: So much like the other books in this series Promised is going to focus on one couple primarily but we do get regular appearances of all the other characters. The couple in this book is Ellis and Hujun. I liked the contrasts straight from the beginning, we know Hujun like other Sidyths is over 7-foot-tall while Ellis isn’t even over 5 feet, but I also liked the contrasts in their relationship with others. What I mean by this is that Blythe and Korben have a shy but passionate relationship, York and Azan have quite a forceful one which suits their individual personalities while Ellis and Hujun’s relationship is more complex.
After being attacked by Yayk, Ellis seems to be suffering from some form of PTSD and Hujun is the only person she feels comfortable around and it seems that he is also the only person who knows what happened to Ellis. Due to this close protective relationship, Ellis is developing sexual and possibly romantic feelings for Hujun, who is considered ugly by most, but she is struggling to deal with her anxiety and fear surrounding sex. Hujun is also an interesting character because he is considered ugly by both Sidyth and human alike he has closed part of himself off, so he doesn’t get hurt and I don’t think that Ellis has picked up on this because she doesn’t see him as ugly at all.
As we cross the ¼ mark in the novel we see the first interaction between Ellis and Hujun and it doesn’t go as planned. However, during the resulting confrontation, Ellis makes Hujun see that she doesn’t need his kind of pitying protection but something more and she is beginning to see that he doesn’t really know how to ask what he wants. So after a week of not speaking and several conversations with Blythe, Ellis feels now might be the time to see Hujun again.
As we approach the halfway mark in the novel, Hujun and Ellis begin talking again but neither can really communicate how they are feeling as it doesn’t help that both have quite the temper. However, one-night Ellis does manage to convince Hujun to kiss her which was a beautiful scene although it was interrupted by something highly unusual. In light of recent events, Hujun feels he must do something to help Ellis and make her feel safe once and for all, but it leads to them ending up in quite the steamy situation and sharing a dwelling for the night. In among all this, there seems to be a whisper of discontent and a rumour that there might be somebody among them who is working against Korben and my money is on Iriel, he gives off creepy vibes and I honestly don’t like him.
As we cross into the second half of the novel, Hujun is beginning to carry out his plan to keep Ellis safe but after another misunderstanding, she ends up in more danger than she has ever been before because of him. However, afterward he shows her another side of himself and when she doesn’t turn him away, he realises she may be the perfect woman for him and is willing to open up even more of himself to her.
As we cross into the final section of the novel, we see Hujun and Ellis finally come to understand each other, and it is a beautiful scene that really brought a tear to my eye. Overall, Promised was my favourite book in the series and Hujun and Ellis are my favourite couple closely followed by York and Azan. I highly recommend this series if you are looking for a sci-fi alien romance series that is quick, fun and really intoxicating.
