Title: Purchased
Author: Sabrina Kade
Genre: Sci-Fi/Romance
Rating: *****
Review: So, this is the first work of an author I have read a lot from under her new pseudonym and I was really excited what she was going to do with a radically different genre and reading audience. The opening to Purchased was brilliant, we are introduced to Blythe a 24-year-old girl who is supposedly an intergalactic entertainer, but she is far more than that. At her core, she is just a girl trying to help her father by any means necessary. However, their newest assignment isn’t what it seems either like a lot of the girls chosen for the assignment.
When they arrive at their destination the girls are begrudgingly working together but they are soon split up and Blythe realises that something isn’t quite right with this assignment, but she has no choice but to go along with it. As we approach the ¼ mark in the novel, we are introduced to Korben who is a Sidyth, a race not known for their kindness but when he claims Blythe, she is almost overwhelmed with her desire. We soon learn that Korben isn’t like other Sidyths despite being a displaced prince he is also kind and focused on Blythe’s pleasure and he wants her to want him because she wants to not because she has been paid to do it.
As we approach the halfway mark in the novel, Korben is trying to learn more about his Chosen but Blythe is still really confused as to why he is acting the way he is given what she knows about their race. However, soon they begin to learn about each other’s history and how they work as people, but Blythe’s insecurities and past treatment is catching up with her.
As we cross into the second half of the novel, Blythe and Korben take their relationship to the next level and while Blythe doesn’t care about the assignment anymore she is always painfully aware that this all might be a dream and be taken from her the moment the sun rises. Seeing this pair growing and learning together was beautiful and it sets this novel apart from other alien romance novels which focus solely on the physical rather than the mental and emotional as well.
As we approach the ¾ mark in the novel, Blythe manages to convince the other girls that this life, although it might not be permanent, is worth taking a risk on and most of the other girls agree. We also see some other budding romance like the one between York and Azan, although they mention Azan’s constant rejections and I am not sure why, but I have a feeling that York might accept him. I really liked the fact that this story isn’t only about getting the girls to accept the Sidyths, but also getting the Sidyths to accept the human girl and their human customs.
As we cross into the final section of the novel, we finally get to see both races change their opinions of each other and open up to the idea of more than the lives they have been living, but I have a feeling it isn’t going to be all sunshine and rainbows. Overall, I found Purchased completely different from this author’s other works and I loved it. The relationship between Blythe and Korben is adorable and I can’t wait to see more from this pair and hopefully some of the other potential couples very soon.
