Resurrection Point by William Blackwell

Book Review

Title: Resurrection Point

Author: William Blackwell

Genre: Horror/Spiritual/Paranormal

Rating: *****

Review: I have read quite a few books by William Blackwell and I have loved all of them, so I was really excited to jump into his dark fantasy again with Resurrection Point. The opening introduces us to Byron Solstice who is having a very unusual and realistic nightmare where he is having to kill creatures almost like a video game, but it seems so real but Bryon shrugs it off. Bryon writes horror books for a living, but his new novel is about resurrection which has already been mentioned a few times in the opening chapter, so we know it is going to be a central theme to the story. Bryon is taking some time off from writing and spending it with his girlfriend; Akila when they witness a car crash, rushing to help Bryon realises that one of the people is his friend; Elias Masters who died on impact. Bryon is obviously disturbed by this and I have a feeling this is going to have a huge impact on Bryon.

As is the case with Blackwell’s other novels, he introduces a cast of characters that have similar goals. While we know Bryon wants Elias back we are also introduced to Riley; an old man who lost his wife Eleanor, but he is taking active steps to get her resurrected with help from the mysterious Samuel. As we follow Riley a little more closely, I was starting to get serious Pet Semetery vibes. This mainly comes from the character’s attitude to death and how they feel they can bring back their loved one without any consequences. Obviously, these small interactions with Riley have a profound impact on Susanne, Elias’ fiancé who wants exactly what Riley has achieved but we have yet to find out what he has paid Samuel for his help as there is always a price to be paid. There are also huge paranormal/mythological elements in the story alongside the spiritual and dark elements that define classic horror writing.

I don’t want to give anything away but as things start to happen, we can feel the tension rising. As you read the words, your heart starts to beat faster in anticipation about what is going to happen to the characters we have been introduced to. As the novel progresses, fantasy and reality begin to blur and at times it is difficult to determine what is real and what is not but that doesn’t make it any less thrilling to read. I don’t want to give anything away about the ending, but the action scenes are beautifully written blending the macabre and spiritual into one and the way the story concluded was satisfying but left a beautiful hint at something more to come and I wouldn’t be surprised to find a sequel might be released in the future.
