This is the last but one book in the series with the final book to be published later this year and I couldn’t wait to get into it. In this book we are following Hazel whose parents died in a car crash when she was sixteen and for the past nine years she has been the ward of her father’s old army friend, Devan. One of the first thing Hazel noticed even through her grief was that she was attracted to Devan but he sent her to boarding school. Every year she has acted out in some way on her birthday in order to get his attention and he has always come to her rescue even when she believed that she didn’t need it. Now she is turning 25, Devon is freed on his responsibilities as Hazel in now in control of her own trust fund and all she wants for this birthday is Devan. Like clockwork he appears when she needs him most and makes it clear to him she doesn’t need him to save her any longer and makes him the offer which he refuses. This does hurt Hazel but she doesn’t let it show and they discuss an incident between them the previous year and again he refuses her. Hazel decided to use a different tactic and tells him if she doesn’t go to bed with him tonight she is going with someone else and the possessive side of Devan comes out.
Devan eventually gives into Hazel and orders her to her room with instructions to strip and wait for him but this doesn’t mean she can’t tease him from the room. By the time he arrives, there is a tension between them and when Devan finally crosses the line and touches her we can see how easily this couple fit together. I liked the dynamic here as Devan is clearly a Dom and Hazel is a bratty sub. As they begin their night together we can see that Devan has been a constant in Hazel’s traumatic life and he is the only person in the world who understands how she feels. She frequently thinks about how other partners in her life have wanted the pretty, little rich girl but not the broken young woman she really is and Devan sees this. She confesses to him while he is going down on her that she wants to recreate her other birthdays and complete the fantasies they both had at the time but didn’t dare fulfil. As the pair begin re-enacting Hazel’s birthdays we see that it is Devan trying to edge into something more intimate but Hazel immediately withdraws because she is sure after this night she will never have Devan again and it seems like a self-fulfilling prophecy at this point. After recreating two birthdays the pair are wiped out but Hazel knows there are still 3 more to go. Devan mentions negotiating so they can spend another 24 hours together and re-enact the final three birthdays and Hazel agrees but we know she wants more than anything to have a lot longer with Devan but she doesn’t believe she is going to get it.
Watching this pair together was amazing but both are secretly agonizing over the fact it has to end and when morning come it is Hazel who decides to leave and Devan does nothing to stop her. For the next two weeks she tries to return to her normal life but finds herself missing Devan and finding no pleasure in her work or her life of luxury like she had before. On a whim she decides to tag her location knowing that Devan has monitored it in the past and she taunts him through texts until he does show up the following morning. There both confess that they love each other and want a life together, marriage, children and everything else. However, before they can experience making love for the first time Devan has to tease Hazel within an inch of her life because he has suffered without her. Watching them come together as a couple for the first time was really heart-warming as they are going to work through all their issues and grief together with Devan taking care of Hazel in the way she deserves. Overall, I have to say I am loving this series and I can’t wait for book 5 to come out.
