September Reviews

So, I didn’t read a much as I’d wanted to in September but October is definitely going to be a better month with all the spooky reads I have planned and Dewey’s 24-hour readathon on the 20th.

1. Seven Ways We Lie by Riley Redgate **** – So after reading Noteworthy I managed to get my hands on both Seven ways we lie and Final Draft by Riley Redgate, but both have sat on my TBR for ages, but I am finally getting to them. I was reading this book in a physical format as well as the audiobook which is narrated by a full cast similar to the Illuminae series which I loved. So this book features perspectives from Oliva, Kat, Matt, Juniper, Valentine, Claire and Lucas, and the novel opens with Olivia’s perspective. I know each of the characters who have a perspective represents one of the seven deadly sins and I was eager to work out who represented which sin. So, we learn that Olivia is the promiscuous one making her seem like lust although this may change. We also learn that one of the teachers in their high school is having a romantic relationship with a student, but no names are mentioned, and this will make up the mystery element of the story. We are also introduced briefly to Matt who is running for Junior class president as well as Olivia and Juniper and we learn that Kat is Olivia’s sister. Their mother, I believe is dead, and Kat’s behavior has changed a lot recently, but the sisters don’t seem to be that close now.

2. Trapped in Room 217 by Thomas Kingsley Troupe ***** – The opening to Trapped in Room 217 was great, we meet Jayla and her brother, Dion, who move to Estes Park, Colorado for their father’s job in landscaping. However, it means pulling the kids out a little early for school, but they shouldn’t be there more than a week. I liked how this is a broken family dynamic as the mother left them a long time ago, so it is just Jayla, Dion, and their dad.

3. A Book Without Dragons by Olivia Berrier **** – The opening to a book without dragons was, we are introduced to Willow Ayers in the year 2054, who is one of the creators of Unitime which basically controls all electronics. However, strange things start happening with clocks being wrong, phone calls dropping and much more which should be impossible due to Unitime’s technology. We begin to see how this begins effecting everyday people and when we are finally introduced to Willow’s perspective we learn that he might not be able to fix the system, he might just have to stabilize it long enough for NASA to launch the old technology back into space, but he isn’t sure he can even do that. Despite his fame, Willow seems to be a bit of a recluse with the only person he trusts Jasper who is his friend from college who works for the FBI.

4. Purchased by Sabrina Kade ***** – So, this is the first work of an author I have read a lot from under her new pseudonym and I was really excited what she was going to do with a radically different genre and reading audience. The opening to Purchased was brilliant, we are introduced to Blythe a 24-year-old girl who is supposedly an intergalactic entertainer, but she is far more than that. At her core, she is just a girl trying to help her father by any means necessary. However, their newest assignment isn’t what it seems either like a lot of the girls chosen for the assignment.

5. Things I’d Rather Do Than Die by Christine Hurley Deriso *** – So, the premise of this novel is quite basic, two people who have ideas about the other are locked in a room together and are forced to confront their prejudices and each other. The opening to Things I’d Rather Do Than Die was great, we are introduced to Jade who is sick from what I gather and work at a gym as a part-time job while being in school. Jace seems to be an outlier and doesn’t really fit in anywhere but she doesn’t stand out either. We are also introduced to Ethan who is the kind of guy you sit up and take notice of thanks to his good genes and charming personality.

6. A Thousand Perfect Notes by C. G. Drews ***** – So, I didn’t know much about A Thousand Perfect Notes going into it, as it wasn’t on my TBR, but I received it in an ARC bundle I won. The opening was interesting, to say the least, we are introduced to Beck, his sister Joey and their mother known as the Maestro. It is obvious from the start that Beck and his mother have an abusive relationship as she mentally and emotionally abuses him for not being good enough at the piano that he even contemplated cutting off his hands to spite her. She is also financially abusive towards her children as they have sub-standard clothes and shoes, but they own a $20,000 piano in the house.

7. SeQuence Entangled by Lorraine L M L *** – So, after rating the first two books in this series 4*’s I was expecting many things from SeQuence Entangled and Lorraine didn’t disappoint. The opening to Entangled, explains a little better what the SeQuence is and what it means for Lessi, our heroine. As this is the 3rd book in the series, I am not going to go into too much detail, so I don’t spoil books 1 & 2 for new readers but I will be providing some general thoughts on what I thought of the book overall.

8. Love Spell by Mia Kerick *** – The opening to Love Spell was, we are introduced to Chance César who has to one of the most flamboyant characters I have ever read from but when he is crowned Miss Harvest Moon as a joke he takes it all in his stride. We also meet Jasper (Jazz) Donahue, who was one of the people that voted for Chance but not in a vicious way, he actually voted for Chance because he felt that Chance would best Miss Harvest Moon, incidentally, he also wins the title of Pumpkin King.

9. Guarded by Sabrina Kade ***** – So, I absolutely loved Purchased and apart from Blythe and Korben my next favorite character was the spunky York and this novel follows her P.O.V. during the same events as Purchased. This novel begins during the week Blythe was taken by Korben and didn’t see the other girls and how she and Azan seems to develop a connection from afar but when Blythe returns, and she learns that Korben asked Azan to watch her she feels betrayed, but I think there is more to this than York knows right now.

10. Blood Crescent by S. M. McCoy *** – The opening to Blood Crescent was, we are introduced to Crystal Dylan and her father who are running from dangerous creatures who are after Crystal because she is the next in line after her mother who disappeared. We learn that Crystal is turning into a creature which sounds like a vampire and she has to make a choice about what is going to happen next. However, we then jump three months into the past, where we see Crystal trying to believe that her mother was kidnapped and not dead, her friend Victor is someone who believes her, but she doesn’t confide in him that she can still feel the shadows following her.
