Silver in the Wood by Emily Tesh (The Greenhollow Duology Book 1)

Book Review

Title: Silver in the Wood by Emily Tesh (The Greenhollow Duology Book 1)

Genre: Fantasy, LGBT

Rating: 4 Stars

Now I wasn’t expecting much when I picked up Silver in the Wood but I have heard good things about this duology and it was short to boot. This entire story centres around the Greenhollow wood and the mythical creatures that dwell within. When ownership of the wood passes to Henry Silver, he ends up meeting the gamekeeper, Tobias Finch, who unknown to Henry has been guarding and caring for the woods for over 400 years. Henry immediately flirts with Tobias and the pair end up becoming friends but there is more to that on both ends but Tobias has a job to do first.

On of the creatures we see the most of are the dryads and they are amazing especially Bramble, showing off their unique personalities along with their abilities. After Henry helps Tobias recover from a bullet to the leg, we learn there is something more sinister about the woods. The Lord of Summer arrives every year and takes a sacrifice in order to keep him away from the rest of the year, until the following summer that is. This year when he arrives he takes Henry as his sacrifice despite Tobias pleading with him to take another. Tobias is heartbroken but doesn’t think he can do anything about it until Henry’s mother turns up looking for her son and he realises he knows as much about the creatures in the woods and knows how to get her son back.

While the plan works in part they are too late for Henry or so it seems, upon the felling of the old oak Tobias is freed from his duty of caring for the wood and he with Henry’s mother begin dealing with the supernatural creatures popping up all over the country. Eventually, Henry does return but he has now been given the duty of caring for the wood as he chose it and it chose him unlike with Tobias where the wood chose him but he didn’t chose it. Henry and Tobias also get their semi-happy ending with Tobias promising to do human things that he hasn’t been able to do and to return to the wood and to Henry when he is done. Honestly, this was a cute and heart-breaking novella to read and I wish it had been longer for us to get more time with Henry and Tobias as well as some more backstory on the Lord of Summer but I really enjoyed it and can’t wait to read the second book.
