Review: This is the last but one book in the series and after the dramatic ending on Troubled War, I couldn’t wait to get into the climax of this series. We left Amel after she had been captured by Starie, but she did learn that Raolcan wasn’t dead and on his way to help her. However, I have to mention that Starie has changed and matured as a character since we saw her last at the dragon trials and I really wish we had seen more of her during her journey even if it was only a chapter or two. During her first night as a prisoner, Amel learns that Starie can almost read her mind and she also knows if she is going to have any chance of getting her and Leng out alive, she will need to use her head and not allow her emotions to get in the way. The following day Starie attack forces is flying to meet up with the rest of their army and they are taking Amel with them as they have Leng as leverage, however, the first thing Starie asks for is for Amel to tell her everything she knows about Savette and for some reason I have a very bad feeling.
While she is being kept prisoner Amel decides that no matter what she is going to let Starie use her for their own cause, even though as a reader I can see that Starie makes some valid points. When they reach the encampment, they find Ashana is also prisoner and before Amel tells them about everything that has happened in the time they have been apart she agrees to marry her and Leng. This small, tiny ceremony in the middle of the enemy’s camp was beautiful and Raolcan finally makes contact telling Amel that he is on the way to help her and we can see our heroes hope hasn’t died yet. However, things don’t look good for them by the time they reach Dominion City where Savette’s forces are still fighting and prepared to die for the Chosen One, Starie is trying to use Amel to get Savette to surrender but that isn’t going to happen because Savette understands they are fighting for something bigger than one life, no matter how much that one life means to them personally.
Amel has also reunited with Raolcan who was captured by Iskaris and has been blinded in his remaining eye which hurts Amel more than anything else that has happened to her. It seems the final battle is approaching as Starie and Savette prepare to face off but Starie leaves a message that if an hour passes without surrender or Starie is killed then they are to kill Amel. However, as the battle begins in earnest, Raolcan informs Amel that help is on the way in the form of Jalla and the Baojang army. With her hope renewed Amel is willing to die for the cause when Jalla swoops in to save the day once again and bring hope to the Lightbringers. Amel immediately mounts Raolcan and heads into the battle and they realise that Starie can’t use her power on Raolcan because he is now blind and he comes up with a plan to retrieve the Pipe from Starie and turn the tide of the battle in their favour once more. Seeing Amel achieve this way wonderful and she has grown so much as a character from the shy, timid girl we meet in First Flight and I can’t wait to jump into the conclusion of this series straight away.
