Book Review

Title: Terror Man Vol 1 by Dongwoo Han

Genre: Manga, Action

Rating: 5 Stars

I requested this because the synopsis sounded interesting and I’m always on the lookout for new manga to read. Terror Man follows Jungwoo Min who has a superpower called Eyes of Misfortune. His eyes always him to see outcomes to events that will cause misfortune to him and the first time he activated it was in a landslide that killed his mother. After that his father brought a woman back from Russia called Lilia to be a housekeeper and undercover bodyguard for his son but he doesn’t find this out until much later.

In the opening scene of the manga we see a terrorist threatening to blow up a bridge but we then jump back two years. At this time Jungwoo is using his powers for small things like cheating on exams and winning games that other students gamble on. One day he and Lilia go shopping and Jungwoo sees the purple mist that means misfortune covering the entire department store and he realises it is going to collapse but no one will listen to him and evacuate. Lilia ends up calling her friend to help them out and they become pretend terrorists claiming they have planted a bomb to get people to evacuate and it works before the building collapses. During the collapse, Jungwoo uses his power to save a reporter even though it isn’t what a terrorist would do.

Jungwoo tries to back to normal after the store collapse but he ends up on a bridge after a car accident and helps save a woman and her child before the purple mist appears. With Lilia’s help they realise a real terrorist was planning to blow up the bridge and Jungwoo uses his role as a terrorist to clear the bridge making sure no one dies. In the aftermath he ends up meeting the real terrorist and is attacked and shot before Lilia arrives to save the day, beating up the real terrorist but the police arrive and they have to make their escape before they can deal with him.

However, during this time Jungwoo realises that this man has the same tattoo as a woman that attended his mother’s funeral and he realises that the landslide wasn’t a natural occurrence after all and he is determined to find and stop this terrorist organisation and learn the truth of why his mother was murdered in the first place. Towards the end of the volume Lilia’s friend who is hiding with them because he was the only one of the three identified by the police ends up taking the reporter from the department store hostage because he thought she was the delivery man. Jungwoo explains his ability to her and why he has been posing as the terrorist which is proves to her as they head to Lilia’s location as she has gone after the real terrorist and is in danger.

Overall, I really liked this opening volume to Terror Man and I definitely will be continuing with it. If you’re looking for an action packed series, with great characters and a fast moving plot then I’d highly recommend checking this one out and I hope it has or will get an anime adaptation in the future.
