Review: Where What Really Happened in Peru took place in 1791 in Peru, this story takes place in the same year but in Paris. The Runaway Queen sees Magnus in Paris around the time the French Revolution was taking place and he seems to be doing quite well despite the fact that Paris is a home of many vampires, some of whom have their eyes on Magnus like Saint Cloud who invites Magnus to a party and he can’t refuse the invitation. However, in the time meaning Magnus is visited by a man called Axel asking for his help in getting the royal family safely out of Paris and Magnus agrees.

The following night Axel returns and tells Magnus of the plan to get the royal family out of Paris, all orchestrated by Marie Antoinette herself. All Magnus asks for in return is to see Axel again and he has taken a liking to him and Axel surprisingly agrees. However, the plan encounters some complications and needs to be delayed a night which clashes with Saint Cloud’s party but Magnus does make a trip to the royal residence and puts a glamour on the Queen before heading to the party which is a hotbed of everything Magnus dislikes about vampires. Not even this goes smoothly as one of the vampires finds the Queen wandering the streets and Magnus sells it as some of his magically work and Saint Cloud wants to buy her and he manages to buy himself some time telling Saint Cloud the work wasn’t finished.

Locked in a room, Magnus has mere minutes to get the Queen out of there and to safety by borrowing a balloon to fly to the location Axel was picking up the royals. Axel’s name inspires the Queen to trust Magnus as he safely delivers into the hands of Axel but he attracts the displeasure of Saint Cloud who kills his servants in retaliation and Magnus accepts his punishment in leaving Paris and not to return. However, we know from history that the French royal didn’t escape, and Magnus learns that the King and Queen have been captured and imprisoned for their impending deaths, but Axel managed to escape. Axel’s sister, Sophie writes to Magnus telling him that her brother is determined to return to Paris despite the fact it would mean his death and asks Magnus to change his mind and the story ends with Magnus writing a letter to Axel although we don’t know what information this letter contained. Having only recently read Enchantee by Gita Trelease, I had so many similar vibes from The Runaway Queen and I absolutely loved it.
