Rating: ****
Review: So as these books are so short this isn’t a cohesive review but a collection of my thoughts as I read the series. So I read book 1 a while back and after re-reading this book, I found I liked the put yourself in the protagonist’s shoes style more than I did the first time around. We don’t know much about what is going on but that definitely comes later.
The second book was a lovely second installment in the series. We are treated to a lot of new things but there also seems to be an underlying story to everything happening and I am trying to figure out the mystery along with the protagonist. It is during book 3 that we can see that Hannah and Conrad have a special relationship, but it is presented in many different forms and we aren’t quite sure what is happening as we see to be bouncing back and forth in time and to various different locations, but I urge you to stick with it.
Book 4 was another amazing entry in this series, I really liked how we are piecing together these encounters and what they mean. Are they memories, fantasies, roleplays or something more? I honestly can’t wait to find out and if you thought this entry was hot the next promises us more. Despite this series being an adult series, I was really enjoying it. We are now beginning to see 2 characters reappearing, and these are Charlie and Conrad. Hannah seems to sway between fear and arousal when it comes to Charlie, but Conrad is her constant and it doesn’t matter what form he appears in, she desires him and dare I say loves him, but she doesn’t remember anything. However, from her journey so far, she knows every version of Conrad she has encountered isn’t the real him who she is now searching for.
So door 6 was a similar adventure we have seen before which would have made me give the book a lower rating, but the ending really saved it. The introduction to book 7 is very interesting. We have known since book 1 that Hannah seems afraid of this door but when we enter this door, we are introduced to something new. It seems Hannah is married to Charlie, but he is cheating on her and she is also cheating on him with Conrad, could this mean we are getting closer to the truth and I can’t wait to find out.
Compared to the other books that seem to jump back and forth between different fantasies, this feels like reality and I loved it. The complex relationship between Hannah, Conrad, and Charlie is raw and real and it makes you feel so much more than your average smutfest. The reaction Hannah has at the end of the book 7 makes me hope that book 8 will bring some clarity to the situation and what these doors truly mean.
I don’t know how I can express what I felt during this book, but I am going to try. So as I predicted this book brings everything together and explains everything that has happened in the previous 7 novels. It turns out that Hannah is married to Charlie, but he is cheating on her leading her to start her own affair with Conrad and both find love somewhere else. However, before Hannah can leave Charlie, she develops meningitis and falls into a coma.
All the fantasies that have happened are inside Hannah’s mind as she tries to come out of her coma which she eventually does and the person that leads her out of the darkness is Conrad. This book was filled with some many feelings and it was definitely worth the journey through the previous 7 doors.
The final book I did have mixed feelings about, while I loved this series, I felt that this story despite being beautifully written and executed it didn’t fit the overall tone the story was going for and it didn’t feature any of the male characters we had come to love. Whether it was a memory or just something that Hannah’s mind conjured up it didn’t fit the theme of Conrad’s love bringing Hannah back, so I am glad it didn’t make it into the series as was kept as a little bonus extra.
Overall, I rated this book very different from 1 to 5 stars although at least 4 books got five stars so the overall rating for this series is higher than I would have expected but I did really enjoy the story and the mystery elements that were worked into the plot. I highly recommend this series.
