Book Review
Title: The Dare by Harley Laroux
Genre: Dark, Erotic, Romance
Rating: 5 Stars
I have read The Dare before but since I have been binge reading Laroux’ books I decided to reread it. We are introduced to Jessica Martin and Manson Reed as they are attending the same Halloween party. The relationship between this pair is strained at best because Jessica used to bully Manson in high school apart from one occasion where she kissed him to make her boyfriend, Kyle jealous although I think there was more to that than Jessica lets on. After the kiss Kyle confronts Manson intending to beat him up and Manson defends himself with a knife getting himself expelled from school which Jessica has always regretted because she wanted to stand up for Manson but her pride wouldn’t allow it and it is her pride that starts off the story. Manson challenges Jessica to a game of beer pong which turns into drink or dare, throughout the game Manson riles Jessica up and challenges her to some interesting dares including kissing his boots and handing over her underwear.
This game gets even more interesting when Manson offers Jessica an all or nothing bet, if she wins she can walk away but if she loses she has to be his slave for the entire night and she agrees. Naturally, she loses but her pride won’t let her walk away even when she should so she becomes Manson slave and he delights in humiliating her but she also begins to enjoy it too despite her protests. When her bratty side comes out, Manson is swift in dealing out appropriate punishments in order to tame that nature. The variety of sex scenes throughout the novel are interesting as it introduces a lot of BDSM elements while still being gripping and realistic. Most of the novel consists of Manson putting Jessica in her place until she accepts which she eventually does as she surrenders to the feeling of submission especially at Manson’s hand. While there is a lot of sexual interactions we only get one full sex scene at the end of the novel and it heavily implies that there is more than hatred between the pair and they are starting their relationship off on a new foot. I would love to see more of Jessica and Manson in the future especially if Laroux decides to expand on their relationship. I only have the Souls trilogy left to read and I have read the majority, if not, all of Laroux’s published works.
