Title: The Doctor (Nashville Neighborhood Book 1) by Nikki Sloane
Genre: Erotic, Romance
Rating: 4 Stars
The Doctor starts off by introducing the main characters Cassidy, her boyfriend, Preston and his father, Dr. Lowe. Cassidy and Preston have been together for years but recently she has noticed changes in his behaviour and she isn’t sure that she likes the new version of Preston. When he fails to turn up to her grandmother’s funeral because he has forgotten and gone to the cinema with his friend she decides it is finally time to call things off with him. She notices on this day as well that Dr. Lowe seems to be showing an interest in her which she has noticed before but done nothing about. When Dr. Lowe tells her that she should break things off with Preston which she already has, he comforts her which eventually leads to them kissing. After reading Daddy’s Angel by K. A. Knight I am really come to appreciate an older man in these sorts of novels and I can’t wait to see where this novel goes.
After kissing Greg for the first time Cassidy is overcome with her desire for him but she needs to get closure with Preston first. When she returns to the house to speak to him when Greg isn’t home, she runs into him almost literally as he has just returned from his shift. After speaking to Preston and realising that the three years of their relationship meant virtually nothing to him, Greg is there to comfort her and this time she doesn’t fight her desire for him. He invites her to spend the night with him and she accept even knowing that Preston is in the house and their relationship is very wrong. Greg is amazing to read about as he is constantly making sure Cassidy is ok with whatever he is doing and she is leading the encounter and even when he is overcome with desire he constantly gives her opportunities to pull away and change her mind which she doesn’t. The first night between the pair was amazingly well written and Sloane definitely deserves major brownie points for it but when Cassidy slips away in the early hours she is struck by what they have just done as they have crossed a line they can’t really return from.
After spending the first night together both Cassidy and Greg have second thoughts not about themselves but about what the other thought. When Cassidy realises that she left her hoodie at the Lowe house she returns where she once again has to make it clear to Preston that they are over and he lashes out at her but Greg is there to keep him under control. After leaving in tears Cassidy returns after Greg’s offer to talk but she has plans to distract him which go very well and the dress scene was hot to say the least but afterwards they do talk. Greg wants to tell Preston what is going on between them but Cassidy is against it as Preston’s relationship with Greg is rocky and he is going to think that she left him for his father which isn’t what she wants. Cassidy explains if they do that it will damage Greg’s relationship with Preston and neither of them are strong enough to stay away from the other so they agree to keep it a secret until the end of the summer when they will tell Preston but I have a feeling he is going to find out sooner rather than later. At the halfway mark in the novel I was really enjoying the plot and the “plot”, Sloane has some wonderful writing which you don’t really get to see in this kind of novel and the interactions and dialogue don’t feel forced at all which is another major bonus and not something you see in this kind of novel, the only other authors that can write this well that I have read from are K. A. Knight and Katee Robert who I’d also highly recommend.
Getting to see the relationship between Greg and Cassidy progress was wonderful as it isn’t always about sexual acts with them. While there are plenty of these scenes it is more about them getting to know one another as Cassidy takes him to Joven concert, her favourite band and he introduces her to “classic” movies like the original Ghostbusters and Top Gun which she has never seen before. I was interested to see where Sloane would take the story as we are only halfway through and everything seems pretty settled, the only real cause of tension right now would be Preston finding out but we know he is due to leave for North Carolina soon so Cassidy will have Greg all to herself. Cassidy finds herself staying the night more than once but when a neighbour Judy catches them together, Greg is sure that she will tell Preston about them just to spite him because he isn’t interested in her. While he urges Cassidy that they need to tell Preston when he returns she still doesn’t want to and this isn’t because of her previous relationship with Preston it is because she isn’t sure where she and Greg are going or if their current relationship can evolve into something more. The next time they meet up it is to play out Cassidy’s doctor fantasy but before they can continue Greg is called back to the hospital so Cassidy waits for him. She ends up falling asleep and when he wakes her she realises that he has lost a patient and that he is upset by this and he needs her and she lets him takes her in a way no one else has before deepening the connection between them.
However, on Cassidy’s 20th birthday Preston finds out about her and Greg by walking in on them together and he forces Greg to choose between him and Cassidy and because Greg is trying to make up for the mistakes he made when Preston was young he choose his son. This is devastating for Cassidy and when her appendix is about to burst and she needs surgery she realises that Greg is her only option but this sparks a chain of events no one them could have ever imagined. Greg and Preston have a serious talk while Cassidy is recovering from surgery and Preston realises how bad his behaviour has gotten to the point where he didn’t even realise that cheating on Cassidy while they were together was going to be harmful to her and he has decided to work on it. The first thing he does is apologize to Cassidy and stops trying to come between her and Greg because even he can see that she cares for him and he for her. Cassidy’s mother also realises at the same time that Cassidy loves Greg and while she doesn’t like the idea at first she slowly begins to come around when she realises how happy Greg makes Cassidy. The little epilogue of seeing their relationship properly takes off was amazing especially since Preston has a new girlfriend now and is slowly getting more comfortable with Cassidy dating his father. Overall, The Doctor was great and I will definitely be continuing with this series in the future.
