Title: The Dyatlov Pass Mystery by Mayen Cédric and González Jandro
Genre: Graphic Novel, True Crime, Dark
Rating: 4 Stars
A great graphic novel adaptation of one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in recent history. If you don’t know about the Dyatlov Pass Incident, definitely look it up but you might need to be strong of stomach to do so.
The Dyatlov Pass Incident is something that has captivated true crime fanatics like myself for an extremely long time because of the unanswered questions surrounding the deaths of the hikers. For those that are skeptical, these were extremely experienced hikers, with an intimate knowledge of the area, trials and mountains they were climbing.
However, one night, something caused them to flee in the middle of storm without their equipment and adequate clothing. They also split into numerous groups and their bodies were found relatively close to each other. While something like an animal attack might explain driving them out of their tent in the middle of a raging storm, it would have only been for a short period of time since most animals in the region are opportunistic hunters but they would have been prepared for this knowing the area as well as they did.
The cause of death for most of them supported the elements being responsible for their deaths with the exception of one or two which showed signs of a more violent death but there was nothing to explain what or who caused this.
The graphic novel is told from the perspective of an investigation dealing with his investigation being controlled by the Red Army as well as dealing with the mass of grieving families and wanting to provide them answers but having none to give. We also get a timeline in the “past” when the incident is taking place but it focuses more on those involved than how they died and it completely avoids adding in any conspiracy theories for effect which I appreciated.
