The Genesis of Seven (The Empyrean Trilogy #1) by Sara M. Schaller

Book Review

Title: The Genesis of Seven (The Empyrean Trilogy #1)

Author: Sara M. Schaller

Genre: YA/Fantasy/Paranormal

Rating: *****

Review: The Genesis of Seven was a debut novel that really caught my eye and after reading the first instalment in The Empyrean Trilogy, I will definitely be keeping an eye on the series. It reminded me a little of Good Omens as it involves a journey around the world including Heaven and Hell and features an amazing cast of characters that includes angels, archangels, and Satan.

We follow Jordan Conway, an 18 year old orphan, Jordan works delivering packages for Sister Helen who runs the orphanage, and she sends him to deliver a mysterious package that ends with him entering the home of the archangel, Gabriel. I was surprised by how the archangels appear in this book and how they act a lot like normal people rather than all powerful beings. Jordan at this point in the novel isn’t away of the danger he is in when he reads the content of the letter and tries to unravel the hidden meaning contained within. He always wanted to work for the upliftment of the poor and needy, but in the quest of helping people and assisting them with everything, he never thought he would have to risk everything he ever dreamt of.

As this book surrounds a mystery I can’t really talk in depth about it without giving away some major spoilers but I did adore the travel aspect of the book and as the story progresses we get to see the characters develop a huge amount for a debut novel in a series. Jordan is an amazing character to follow and it is becoming quite rare to follow male characters in YA fantasy right now. In contrast, the angel are portrayed beautifully, and they take care of Jordan in ways we don’t really expect but it makes you love them even more. I felt like the angels became brothers to Jordan by the end of the book which made me really keen to read the other books in the series as soon as I can because I have come to love all of them. I also really liked that this was a YA fantasy book that feature no romance whatsoever which was really refreshing, this book also features multiple perspectives and voices which left a huge impact on me as a reader.

Overall, the thing I loved the most about The Genesis of Seven was the characters as they really drive the plot forward but each and every one adds something to the story. Schaller did an amazing job of creating characters and a world that the reader could become emotionally invested in and let her imagination go wild with the description of Heaven and Hell. I honestly can’t wait for the sequels and to re-join these amazing characters as soon as I can.
