Title: The King’s Guard (Girl of Fire and Thorns Book 0.7) by Rae Carson

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Romance

Rating: 4.5 Stars

The first two prequels The Shadow Cats and The Shattered Mountain were amazing introductions to the world, the power system and potential a lot of the characters that the main series is going to focus on so I had high hopes for the final prequel novella, The King’s Guard. We are introduced to Hector who is the youngest squire in the most elite military force serving King Alejandro and he has a personal connection to the King as Hector was his squire when he was still the Prince. Hector is training to be one of the elite guards despite being only 15 years old and on his first day of training under Commander Enrico he is summoned to the King via a page, Adan who might be the same Adam from the Shattered Mountain.

The King is sending him to Puerto Verde to get a message to Isadora, the cousin of Queen Rosaura as her pregnancy isn’t going well and she might die and she wants Isadora to marry Alejandro in her place if she does. Hector takes two other recruits with him since several messengers have already disappeared or died in getting to the Fortress of Wind. Once there the group learn that the master of the Fortress has been keeping Isadora hostage because she is pregnant. Hector manages to rescue her and get her away and deliver the baby safely but she doesn’t want the child. Isadora has also been horribly scarred and disfigured by her father who she killed before they escape. Hector gives the child to Alejandro as a replacement for the child the Queen has lost and they name him, Rosario before giving Hector leave to return to his training in the guard.

Overall, The King’s Guard was a dark and horrific tale in places and I think it is setting up the series to be slightly darker and a little more gruesome than your average young adult fantasy series which I am excited about and I can’t wait to get into Girl of Fire and Thorns straight away.
